The Department of Art and Art History, established in 1911, offers BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

The Digital Media Art (DMA) program at San José State University offers a digital art and design curriculum in the areas of computer graphics, web development, programming, physical computing, fabrication, prototyping, interactivity, and computer games.

The program seeks lecturers for studio art courses with expertise in digital media art, including :

  • Raster and vector graphics for web, print, and broadcast
  • Web development in HTML 5 / CSS, and JavaScript
  • 2D / 3D motion graphics and compositing in After Effects
  • 3D modeling and animation in Autodesk Maya and / or Cinema 4D
  • 3D printing using a wide range of commercial 3D printers
  • Digital video production, editing, compositing, and basic sound design
  • Knowledge of historical and theoretical foundations of digital art and new media

Brief Description of Duties

  • Candidates will teach one or more studio courses in the Digital Media Art (DMA) Program Area with a specific focus on teaching software and hardware for 3D modeling and printing, in addition to digital video.
  • Studio courses meet in a lab environment for 3 hours twice a week.
  • Participation in departmental meetings and assessment and evaluation activities is a requirement of this position.
  • The ideal candidate will encourage critical thinking and iterative concept development within class assignments.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with peers working in all programs within the Department of Art and Art History is an asset since the Department of Art and Art History is a dynamic department that encourages cross-disciplinary practice.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
  • Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).

Required Qualifications

  • Master of Fine Arts Degree in Digital Media Art or related field; a clear demonstration of artistic and / or scholarly achievement, as evidenced by a record of exhibitions, publications, or curatorial projects;
  • teaching experience at the university level; a significant portfolio of creative work with research interests in emerging areas of artistic practice and theory;

demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

L-A / - $4530 - $5405 L-B / - $5405 - $6786

L-C / - $6190 - $8554

L-D / - $7794 - $9385

Range salaries above are the anticipated monthly salary rate of full-time AY faculty part-time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester (full-time AY annual salary rate x 12).
