Job Summary
Provide immediate supervision to a team of technical employees. In conjunction with staff veterinarians, assess Service needs including daily operations and procedure scheduling, staffing levels, work schedules and equipment requirements.
Assess and provide staff training needs, develop, manage and update training protocols and documentation. Responsible for direct supervision of skilled employees including probationary and annual reviews, counseling and disciplinary action, managing appropriate staffing levels, and evaluating clinical competency.
Research and order new supplies and equipment. Provide para-veterinary technical, anesthesia and nursing support for a variety of invasive, non-invasive and diagnostic procedures.
Provide instruction to staff, students, and clinicians in proper techniques for restraint and handling of patients, nursing care, administering treatments and obtaining a variety of diagnostic samples.
Provide equipment and facility stocking, cleaning and maintenance.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

- Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.
- Experience supervising staff in a veterinary clinic setting; skills to recognize, assess, and provide staff mentoring in conflict resolution and technical skills.
- Experience writing and conducting performance evaluations based on position descriptions and established expectations.
- Experience administering a variety of prescribed anesthetic and peri-anesthetic drugs and inducing and maintaining anesthesia in small animal patients.
- Experience using anesthetic delivery, support, and monitoring equipment, assessing patient status and independently responding to changes.
- Experience working independently or as part of a team to coordinate, facilitate, set up equipment, troubleshoot and anticipate needs for activities in assigned areas in an accurate, efficient and timely manner.
- Interpersonal and communication skills to work with a diverse group of people, to include, clinicians, students, and staff in an accurate, professional, and collegial manner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an animal shelter and / or high-volume surgical setting as an animal health technician and / or RVT.
- Experience providing instruction to students, staff, and / or volunteers in the restraint of small animal patients and administration of medications.
- Experience instructing students and staff in a variety of procedures typically performed in a high-volume setting.
- Experience operating common computer database systems.

This position is assigned to the Shelter Medicine Spay / Neuter Service within the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, to assist in the support of high-quality, high-volume spay / neuter surgeons by supervising a team of Animal Health Technicians and instructing senior veterinary students and undergraduate interns.
