Nitty Gritty
You’ll head up a small team focused on a whole-product life cycle, starting with a vision and an analysis of the opportunity / solution / outcome matrix.
From the very get-go, you’ll be employing a multi-threaded why discovery method to get to the root of problems and to dig up solutions.
With a set of clearly desired outcomes and goals, you’ll engage in generative research to find opportunities, and you’ll experiment to evaluate and evolve solutions.
Was all of that just a little too abstract? All right : Picture yourself setting out to build an app that would allow an office manager to quickly book a sudden influx of overseas visitors for a week-long stint.
What features would be required, under what acceptance criteria? How would you come to understand that user’s journey? What kind of interface would the app have?
How would you produce a prototype? Those are the kinds of issues you’ll wrestle with all the time. You’ll need to be nimble and tactical, able to pivot, to iterate, to abandon false leads and bad ideas.
You’ll need to be extremely data-driven. And you’ll need to delegate and leverage your team to produce optimal results.
Hired Gun Profile
For five-plus years, you’ve worked on teams producing sophisticated, UX-intensive products designed to simplify users’ lives.
At this point, you’ve done enough that there’s no part of the product cycle with which you’re anything less than completely comfortable, and you’ve developed an automatically binocular vision that allows you to be extremely tactical and consummately strategic all at once.
You never lose sight of the business end of things.
As a manager of people, you’re flexible but firm, and you get your people to deliver their absolute best over the long haul.
They like working for you because they know you’re not just a talker they see your real talent, your problem-solving ability, your work ethic and your eagerness to give them a happy and well-supported work life, and they’re eager to play on your team to learn what they can from you.
Inside Skinny
In case it’s not clear from the rest of this description, the company cares a lot about the kind of thinker it’s hiring, so be ready to talk about your approach to problem-solving and idea-generation.
