Sr. Software Engineer - IBM Mainframe Production Support
Overview
As Sr. Software Engineer / Programmer Analyst - Mainframe Production Support, you will support key technology components within the Individual Markets mainframe application portfolio.
This role acts as part of a global team to ensure the highest levels of application stability and availability. The position will act independently and / or collaboratively with solution architects, development teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to support the operational aspects of applications and associated infrastructure while responding to end user requests and break / fix items.

You Will
- Perform investigation and troubleshooting of application or infrastructure to resolve issues and determine root cause
- Reads / understands code and ideally identifies problems that may span several systems or integrations
- Understand business flow and interconnectivity of a complex application ecosystem
- Guides managed service partners on all aspects of delivery including Defect fixing and small Enhancements
- Focus on preventative maintenance to improve application uptime and proactively reduce production disruptions
- Uphold established SLAs to satisfy business needs
- Evolve as a subject matter expert to lead specific projects or initiatives
- Partner with Development teams in the planning and execution of production releases to minimize production pain points
- Utilize monitoring tools to identify unacceptable performance which may negatively impact business processing. Ensure end-to-end visibility and optimal tuning of proactive alerts / notifications.
- Effectively and proactively manages customer expectations, raising issues and proposing unique technical solutions to solve business problems;
work with Business to prioritize incidents, defects and minor enhancements
- Regularly review department metrics to identify trends in application defects and escalate appropriately .
- Continuously expand industry knowledge and be able to quickly identify and resolve technology problems
- Interacts with offshore teams operating in a managed service model with distributed teams across different locations / time zones
- Position requires support outside of normal business hours on a fairly regular basis for both scheduled maintenance and unplanned events
You Have
- Bachelor's degree or foreign education equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics Engineering, or Mathematics and six (6)+ years of experience performing systems analysis, development, and quality assurance testing of Mainframe life insurance administration systems
- Demonstrated expertise documenting complex logical data and process modeling and translating Life insurance user needs into business and functional requirements
- Demonstrated expertise performing batch processing of Mainframe Life Insurance Policy Administration transactions
- Demonstrated expertise performing analysis and mainframe programming using COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, SQL, SPUFI, Expediter, TSO, Control M, VSAM or Change-Man
- Demonstrated expertise with CTG, Webservice and other middleware protocols for distributed system / mainframe communication
- Demonstrated knowledge of Enterprise Architecture frameworks
- Demonstrated in-depth Life insurance domain knowledge
- Experience working with ticketing tools such as ServiceNow, Zenoss or any other monitoring tool, AppDynamics (or similar APM tool)
- Proven track record of supporting large scale business critical systems
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills. Quick but methodical thinker; reacts quickly and appropriately with time sensitive issues
- Must be comfortable in a fast paced, changing environment
- Has strong written and verbal communication skills and can clearly articulate all aspects of the job requirements, including the creation of formal documentation
Location :
- Hybrid, 2 Days a week at a Guardian Office in Holmdel,, NJ, New York, NY or Bethlehem, PA.
- Up to 10% travel within US
Salary Range
$91,260.00 - $149,925.00
The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
