About the Job

The University of Minnesota-College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN-CVM) is excited to recruit a clinical pathologist to join our dynamic, cohesive, and supportive team of 4 clinical pathologists and 2 clinical pathology house officers.

The UMN-CVM clinical pathology team strives to provide the highest quality diagnostic care, research, training, and teaching in a high-functioning and collaborative academic environment.

Position :

The UMN-CVM is offering an outstanding opportunity for a clinical (non-tenure) part-time to full time faculty position in clinical pathology at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor.

Rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Position Description :

The primary duties of this position will encompass the provision of excellent clinical pathology and related topics instruction with some clinical pathology diagnostic service and a lesser expectation of supporting collaborative research.

Clinical service responsibilities upon hire will include provision of clinical cytology, hematology, clinical chemistry, and coagulation testing interpretation, clinical instruction to house officers and students, contribution to collaborative research, and personal development and discipline / non-discipline related service to the UMN-CVM and other professional organizations.

Teaching & Professional Development :

Upon hire, the faculty member will be assigned a mentorship committee. This committee will work with the newly-hired faculty member to create a personalized professional development plan to facilitate progressive growth and development.

During this period, faculty are expected to participate in teaching and / or mentoring, including DVM and graduate students and house officers.

Support and instruction for teaching is provided by the CVM Academic and Student Affairs Office and the Center for Educational Innovation (including the Early Career Teaching and Learning Program).

Additional opportunities exist for Leadership, Communication, and Managerial Training.

Clinical Activities :

The UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory is centrally-located within the UMN-VMC and consists of a diagnostic suite, which includes a dedicated, but connected ergonomically-informed, diagnostic reading room.

Clinical instrumentation includes automated hematology (Siemens ADVIA 2120i), clinical chemistry (Beckman Coulter AU480), and coagulation (ACL Top) analyzers.

The UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory is supported by high quality submissions from the UMN-VMC, which is one of the busiest veterinary teaching hospitals in the country with an annual caseload nearing 40,000 patient visits.

Submissions to the UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory largely derive from patients presenting to the UMN-VMC, principally from very busy Oncology, Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Primary Care services.

This allows the successful applicant ample opportunity to further develop their clinical and teaching skills in a collaborative, busy, and vibrant teaching hospital.

The UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory works closely with the CVM Veterinary Diagnostic Flow Cytometry Service to provide high quality flow cytometric support to UMN-VMC clinicians.

Opportunities exist for professional development and research in collaboration with this service.

The UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory also provides some microbiology, parasitology, and surgical pathology services allowing for collaboration and continued professional development in these areas.

Scholarly Activity :

The successful applicant will be expected to provide collaborative research support in alignment with their final effort allocation.

This includes collaboration with UMN-CVM house officers (including clinical pathology trainees), faculty, and students on the design and successful completion of comparative and clinical research projects.

The UMN-CVM Clinical Pathology Laboratory has a long and successful history of scholarly collaboration with internal and external research partners, including clinicians with the UMN-VMC and UMN Raptor Center, The Comparative Pathology Shared Resource, Experimental Surgical Services, The UMN-Veterinary Diagnostic Flow Cytometry Service, and basic scientists across the CVM and UMN Health Sciences Education Center.

For faculty with a focus on teaching, there are several applied research opportunities in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) that aid in assessing the impact of new and innovative teaching practices.

There are multiple opportunities and support for intramural and extramural competitive grant applications. The college is committed to supporting professional development while encouraging work-life balance.
