Tracking Code 20214053 Job Description JOB SUMMARY : Under general direction, directs and supervises Respiratory Therapists on their assigned shift and is responsible for delivering quality patient care.

The following duties are intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities and ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification.

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Supervises Respiratory Therapists. Provides first-line customer service and direction to point of care staff.

Supervises and schedules staff, and assigns tasks and projects. Develops staff skills and training plans. Under the guidance of the Manager of Respiratory Therapy, counsels, trains, and coaches assigned staff.

Implements corrective actions and conducts performance evaluations. Provides leadership, direction, and guidance in respiratory care and procedures.

Coordinates development of educational programs for Respiratory Therapy staff and other hospital personnel in collaboration with the Respiratory Therapy Educator.

Performs staff responsibilities as needed to fulfill required service levels. Performs respiratory therapy assessments according to department procedures.

Administers respiratory treatment in various modalities for acute and chronic respiratory illness as prescribed by the medical staff for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients.

Ensures delivery of clinically appropriate respiratory care procedures. Instructs, orients, and recommends respiratory care and procedures to medical staff, nurses, allied health professionals, and students.

Adjusts equipment as needed. Monitors patients on mechanical ventilation and oxygen support systems for potentially dangerous physical changes.

Recognizes abnormal changes and immediately notifies physician. Maintains secure and patent airways and performs nasal, nasotracheal, endotracheal, and oral suctioning.

Evaluate test results for clarity and accuracy; reviews tests with peers. Distributes completed test results to physicians and service providers.

Maintains patient charts, enters diagnostic and billing codes, logs data into patient information systems, and updates file systems for tests and treatments performed.

Provides patient education and instruction and answers questions and explains procedures.

Maintains competency and certification on all current and new procedures and equipment related to the delivery of respiratory care.

Cleans and sterilizes equipment and workspace. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and readjusts equipment or refers for repair.

Trains and cross-trains other clinical staff as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

  • Knowledge of respiratory modalities and techniques.
  • Knowledge of respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Knowledge of anatomy / physiology and disease process.
  • Knowledge of respiratory therapy patient assessment protocols.
  • Knowledge of management and leadership theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and laws regarding respiratory / patient care and practice.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships and effective communication.
  • Skill in monitoring patient responses.
  • Skill in effectively managing and leading staff, and delegating tasks and authority.
  • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Skill in advising leaders of complex organizational units.
  • Skill in evaluating personnel performance and making recommendations for additional training, if required.
  • Skill in computer applications, including Microsoft Office products, Outlook, and PowerPoint, for presentations.
  • Skill in analyzing reading analyzing, and interpreting common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Skill in responding to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Required Experience MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

A Bachelors degree in Respiratory Therapy from a CoARC accredited program. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Non-supervisory - One (1) year of pediatric and / or neonatal experience, Adult Critical care Specialty and / or Neonatal Pediatric Speciality credentialing and clinical care experience in area of specialty which demonstrates leadership skills and ability to work within a team environment, effective communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, data analysis and research interpretation skills, and computer / word processing skills.

Supervisory Two (2) years involving employee supervision

  • May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
  • May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.
  • According to the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain specific technical certifications and programming language skills.

  • This position requires persistent repetitive movements of the hands, wrists, and fingers and the ability to sit for long periods.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds.
  • May be exposed to infectious diseases or hazardous equipment.
  • May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
  • Requires occasional travel to remote locations by boat, snowmobile, ATV, or small plane.
