Paralegal Casehandler, Housing Justice NYCHA Helpline (Manhattan)

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking one Paralegal Casehandler for the NYCHA and the Housing Justice Helplines.

The Paralegal Casehandler will work on New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) issues impacting residents, focusing on addressing issues related to the conversion of public housing developments to Section 8 under NYCHA's RAD / PACT program.

Specifically, the Paralegal Casehandler will respond to helpline callers from NYCHA developments converting to Project-Based Section 8 under RAD / PACT, to provide information about the process and resident rights.

In addition, the Helpline Paralegal will staff the Housing Justice Helpline answering calls of NYC renters and occupants providing information, advice, brief legal services, resources, and referrals while under the supervision of an attorney

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct telephone intake for tenants calling the NYCHA's RAD / PACT intake line, as well as the Housing Justice Helpline
  • Interview clients, provide advice and direct assistance
  • Identify, assess, and escalate time sensitive and emergency legal issues to supervisory staff
  • Handle a high volume of individual cases and respond to the needs of community-based organizations
  • Advocate with NYCHA around resident rights
  • Develop community education materials and conduct trainings for clients and other advocates
  • Maintain case management
  • Conduct policy advocacy on behalf of clients
  • Other duties as assigned

Manhattan - Legal Aid Society Headquarters

  • Paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited paralegal program or Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • Excellent written, oral advocacy, and computer skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to multi-task and manage a large workload
  • Proficiency in languages other than English, especially Spanish, is strongly preferred
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations
  • Experience in and / or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people and immigrants is strongly desired
  • Experience assisting people in crisis is desirable, but not required
  • Experience staffing a help / hotline or switchboard is preferred

SALARY TRANSPARENCY

The posting reflects the range of potential salaries for the role. The specific salary offers will be dependent on candidate qualifications, including collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range / Salary : $57,687 to $83,218
