10 months; school calendar Appointment Type Part Time Description The School District of Waukesha is seeking qualified individuals to apply for a Bilingual (Spanish / English) Special Education Assistant position at Butler Middle School .

This is a 35 hour / week, benefit eligible position, with summers off! This Special Education Assistant will assist the Special Education Teacher in meeting the diversified needs of one particular student with individual needs.

This position will work collaboratively with the teacher(s) to coordinate and implement care and assistance according to an Individualized Education Plan for this individual who requires one on one care.

Examples of duties may include, but not be limited to the following :

  • Convey the content of the message clearly and accurately according to the receptive language level of the student.
  • Assist in communication throughout the school day in a variety of settings (lunch, peer interactions, emergency drills) as stated in the IEP.
  • At the direction of the teacher, work on academic, communication, social, and self-help skills.
  • Assist the teacher in behavior management and classroom maintenance activities.
  • Assist the teacher in providing instructional activities and reinforcement for special education students.
  • Physically assist with students including lifting as needed.
  • Supervise students during structured and unstructured times at the direction of the teacher.
  • Implement behavior management strategies for a student or a group of students.
  • Assist in the behavior management of students by carrying out plans for students and supervising individual students in both structured and unstructured settings.
  • Assist with personal care procedures as needed for students (ex. dressing, toileting, feeding, etc.)
  • Other assignments as directed by the teacher or principal of the building. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality relating to students and families.
  • An ability to obtain CPR and first aid certification within the first few months of employment.

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE :

Must be eligible for or possess a teaching license or Special Education Program Aide license #070 which requires three years of experience with children, or three years of college coursework or a combination equivalent to three years.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written language form.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, federal, state, and / or DPI regulations and handbooks.
  • Ability to communicate with students in a way which fosters the development of a positive self-image.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in dealings with students, parents, other staff and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY :

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and effectively solve problems.
  • Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques in correcting and changing student behavior.
  • Ability to use discretion in handling confidential information about students.
  • Ability to model and reinforce positive behaviors which are expected of students.
