Position Summary :
A monitor technician, also known as a cardiovascular technologist, is responsible for observing and analyzing the heart monitors attached to patients in a hospital.
This role involves working with electrocardiogram waveforms and computer software to analyze the patient’s heart status, identify irregularities, and promptly communicate any issues to doctors or nurses.
Monitor technician positions are commonly found in hospitals, particularly in intensive care and surgical units.
Education :
High school graduation or equivalent, and successful completion of a basic EKG course or proficiency test. Advanced EKG courses are preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, and / or Registrations :
- Basic Life Support certification
- Successful completion of a Basic EKG course
- Technical training from a vocational college
Minimum Experience :
Preferably 1 year of relevant experience.

Selects, sets-up, calibrates and adjusts monitoring equipment in accordance with physician orders. Ensures continued proper functioning of equipment;
troubleshoots equipment problems as identified. Collects, transmits, and documents pertinent patient data to the Registered Nurse (RN) with correct interpretations and interval measurements on each patient at required intervals every shift and with any significant rhythm change.
Maintains current monitored patients in the system; confers with nursing staff to determine correct validation counts and alarm parameters for patients.
Reports alarms and changes of rhythm to RN staff. Greets, screens and processes incoming unit / dept calls, patients, visitors, and messages.
Transcribes physician orders, enters tests, and treatment requests into system. Assembles and maintains patient medical records including posting of results.
Education :
Required : High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience :
Required : Successful completion of EKG class. Familiar with medical terminology.
