General Purpose & Scope : This position provides for the protection and safety of all persons, assets and property on Ivy Tech’s Anderson campus locations.
The incumbent actively engages in the prevention and detection of criminal activity or any activity adverse to the higher education environment.
The position is responsible for assisting in and documenting all instances or reports of crime. Responsible for reporting all violations of federal, state, and municipal laws, and all operating policies and procedures of Ivy Tech Community College.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Adhere to the post orders specific to the campus.
- Demonstrate strong customer service and / or student advocacy through a positive attitude, approachability, adaptability, strong problem-solving skills and desire to identify and support student success.
- Engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which all people are valued and supported.
- Provides security as assigned throughout the college buildings and grounds (including parking lots).
- Provide general assistance to students and visitors (i.e. directions, phone numbers, etc.) especially during busy periods such as registration, conferences and meetings.
- Locking and unlocking doors as required.
- Directing traffic in and out of the campus when necessary.
- Completing incident reports to document all security incidents and submit them to the Dean of Safety & Preparedness.
- Respond to fire alarms to assess situation and coordinate response efforts with Facilities Services as well as local first responding units.
- Be familiar with all procedures in the Emergency Response Guide and Emergency Operations Plan.
- Serve as evening emergency response coordinator, and lead the response to all campus emergencies as instructed in the campus’s Emergency Response Guide and Emergency Operations plan.
- Assist in the removal or restraint of unruly or disorderly individuals.
- Fill out incident, insurance, accident, and other forms as required. Responsible for maintaining confidentiality of information.
- Requires a proper manner and attitude when in constant contact with employees, students, visitors, ambulance personnel, etc.
and occasional contact with local police and other law enforcement agencies.
- Requires knowledge and understanding of departmental and the organization policies and procedures in addition to knowledge and understanding of designated and approved security measures and practices.
- Will input crime reporting data, assist in the management of access control software and other limited security duties as necessary.
- When approached escort students, staff and faculty to and from campus buildings to their vehicles.

Physical Requirements :
Must be able to run, walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
Other Requirements :
Will be required to pass CPR, AED, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens & Stop the Bleed Certification courses within the first three weeks of employment.
Annual or semi-annual re-certification will be required based of certification requirements.
Minimum Qualifications :
- High School diploma or GED.
- Required current, non-restricted Indiana Driver’s license and must be able to be insured by the college.
- Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Skilled in observing situations and decision making.
- Skilled in dealing courteously with the public, students, staff and faculty.
- Ability to translate observations and information into legible, complete and accurate reports.
- Ability to work outside in all types of weather.
- Work long, irregular hours and rotating shifts when required.
- Stand and move around for the majority of an assigned shift.
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, bend and reach overhead.
- Ability to run when responding to emergencies; ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs or ladders.
Preferred Qualifications :
- 2 to 3 years of college course work
- 3 years of experience in a security role / environment
