About Us : Burlington Animal Services provides animal sheltering services for all of Alamance County and its municipalities with an annual pet save rate that exceeds 90%.

What you will do : The position is responsible for the day-to-day management, oversight, and appropriate administration of pet health and foster programs at BAS, including a comprehensive program of veterinary care, high-volume sterilization surgery, specialty surgical procedures, ensuring the physical and behavioral health of all animals housed at the Pet Adoption & Resource Center and off-campus.

Examples of Duties

Manages and oversees programs related to shelter animal health and sterilization, veterinary care, disease management and prevention, vaccinations, and microchipping, among others.

Works closely with the Assistant Director and Chief Veterinarian and Surgeon to ensure that the veterinary program, policy, and practices adhere to state laws and regulations, departmental policies and procedures, and best industry standards for shelter medicine and HVHQ spay / neuter.

Manages population health to ensure efficient and effective animal flow, disease control, and rapid movement of animals through the facility.

Works closely with the Chief Veterinarian and Surgeon to address any ongoing medical conditions and outbreaks of disease and / or illness and effectively coordinates with other workgroups as appropriate.

  • Manages and oversees digital medical records and ensures compliance with NCGS 52J
  • Performs daily rounds and monitors the population and individual pets to ensure medical and behavioral needs are met, including the provision of any needed veterinary care and daily enrichment.
  • Works closely with the Chief Veterinarian and Surgeon and the Assistant Director to draft and update treatment protocols and ensures staff coordinates animal veterinary care appropriately with DVMs.
  • Oversees and regularly performs diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures, including but not limited to animal health assessments and physical examinations;

administration of medications, vaccinations, diagnostic testing, anesthesia, and surgical procedures, along with other qualified staff.

Coordinates with DVMs to facilitate forensic animal cruelty exams as needed, etc.

Manages the foster program, including recruiting new foster volunteers; providing ongoing guidance and support to foster homes, such as training, supplies, and medical and emergency care;

helping to promote pets and maintain the morale of fosters; coordinates appropriate and timely follow-up veterinary treatment and care of pets and movement of pets in and out of foster care.

Supervises three full-time veterinary care specialists and two part-time pet care and enrichment specialists. Creates schedules for supervised staff and ensures coverage in assigned areas.

Trains and evaluates supervised staff, providing coaching as needed.

  • Coordinates scheduling of staff and DVM’s
  • Assists with hiring and performance management in area of responsibility
  • Supervises and assists in maintaining appropriate licenses and detailed and accurate documentation of controlled drugs in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Supervises the performance of and as needed, performs euthanasia by injection. Assists with and / or provides CET training.
  • Purchases supplies and / or equipment related to the area of responsibility to ensure the health and welfare of animals is maintained, coordinating with the Assistant Director and Business and Development Manager as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the state and local laws, regulations, codes, ordinances, and best industry practices relating to the proper treatment, handling, and sheltering of animals, including but not limited to the Veterinary Practice Act and related administrative rules;
  • NCDA& CS Animal Welfare Act and related administrative rules; NC Rabies Law; NC Controlled Substances Act and related administrative rules;

NC Radiation Protection; Workplace safety, etc.

  • Thorough knowledge of veterinary medicine and specific knowledge of shelter medicine and high-volume sterilization.
  • Thorough knowledge of industry standards and best practices, including but not limited to the most recently published ASV Guidelines.
  • Skilled in performing basic and advanced veterinary technical procedures using proper techniques.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in positive management / supervisory principles and practices, effective conflict management, and effective team building
  • Skilled in effective oral and written communication
  • Skilled and knowledgeable with using Microsoft Office (particularly Word, Outlook, and Excel) and other applications or software used to support the position and its responsibilities, such as Chameleon, Acuity, digital Radiology applications, Canva, etc.).

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree related to veterinary technology or animal health science
  • 2 years of related experience with at least 1 year of previous supervisory experience in a similar professional environment.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license

Special Requirements :

  • Certified Euthanasia Technician in the state of North Carolina (or eligible to become certified within the first six months of employment)
  • NC Certified Rabies Vaccinator (or eligible to become certified within first year of employment)
  • Fear Free Certification

Preferred :

  • NCVMB License as a registered veterinary technician
  • Experience in shelter medicine and high-volume spay / neuter with an emphasis on lifesaving.

Supplemental Information

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :

  • Handle animals who are sick or injured, frightened or fractious, or who may display unpredictable behavior.
  • Lift up to 75 lbs. Stand, sit, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and / or crawl to inspect and / or clean shelter enclosures.
  • Lift, carry, and restrain animals and operate vehicles and equipment.
  • Work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as aggressive animals and zoonotic diseases.
  • Work in this position is primarily performed indoors and may occasionally require outdoor work in the community.
