If you can answer YES! then Hawthorne Elementary School may be the teaching opportunity for you. Hawthorne Elementary School is seeking qualified candidates to apply for a Special Education Assistant position for grades 4K-5th.

Bilingual and biliterate (Spanish / English) applicants are preferred, but this is not a requirement.

This position will work collaboratively with the teacher(s) to coordinate and implement care and assistance according to Individualized Education Plans.

Examples of duties may include, but not be limited to the following :

  • Convey the content of messages clearly and accurately according to the receptive language level of the student.
  • Assist in communication throughout the school day in a variety of settings as outlined in the IEP.
  • At the direction of the teacher, work on academic, communication, social, and self-help skills.
  • Assist the teacher in providing instructional activities and reinforcement.
  • Physically assist with students including lifting and transfers as needed.
  • At the direction of the school nurse and as documented in the student's health plan, attend to the students' health needs.
  • Assist with personal care procedures as needed for students (ex. dressing, toileting, feeding, etc.).
  • Other assignments as directed by the teacher or principal of the building.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

We rely on the strength of the passionate, talented, and tenacious people who work within our schools and organization. Qualifications This Special Education Assistant will assist the Special Education Teacher in meeting the diversified needs of students with various disabilities.

As a part of this assignment, you will be required to assist in classroom modifications, communicate effectively with regular and special education staff, provide structure and feedback, and work with other students as assigned.

Qualified candidates should possess :

  • A positive, enthusiastic attitude and a willingness to meet the needs of all children.
  • An ability to maintain confidentiality relating to students and families.
  • Must obtain CPR and first aid certification within the first few months of employment.

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE :

Must be eligible for or possess a teaching license or Special Education Program Aide license #070 which requires three years of experience with children, or three years of college coursework or a combination equivalent to three years.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written language form.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, federal, state, and / or DPI regulations and handbooks.
  • Ability to communicate with students in a way which fosters the development of a positive self-image.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in dealings with students, parents, other staff and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY :

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and effectively solve problems.
  • Utilizing problem-solving techniques in correcting and changing student behavior.
  • Using discretion in handling confidential information about students.
  • Modeling and reinforcing positive behaviors which are expected of students.
