Position Summary :
The Kansas Department of Insurance is seeking a dedicated individual to fill a Communication Specialist position in our Government and Public Affairs Division.
As a Communication Specialist, your primary focus will be assisting the Director of Government and Public Affairs and the Chief of Staff in leading the Department’s communication efforts with the public.
Your role will include proactively driving positive awareness regarding insurance and securities matters via news releases, media statements, media content on the Department’s website, social media, publications and outreach events.
The ideal candidate for this position will be someone who has excellent communications skills, both written and verbal and the ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities
- In coordination with the Director of Government and Public Affairs and Chief of Staff, draft press releases and other media announcements aimed at informing the public of Department news, alerts or announcements.
- Conceptualize, and then either prepare or oversee the design, creation and production of visual communications from the Department to the public including informational graphics and social media graphics and assist with posting to social media sites.
Develop or set templates for the creation of PowerPoint presentations to be used by the Commissioner and other Department staff at speeches or public events.
Lead the Department’s investor education initiative, SmartInvestKS, coordinating the outreach and education to the public through establishment of and promotion of sponsorships, education initiatives and in person events.
Assist with other educational and outreach events.

Qualifications
Required
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a BA / BS in journalism, communications, marketing, public administration, business management or related field(s).
- Professional or technical experience, as deemed by the Commissioner of Insurance to be sufficient qualification to perform the assigned work, may be substituted for the required college study.
Ideal Candidates Will Have :
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, InDesign, and Photoshop) and Microsoft PowerPoint
- Knowledge of Social Media Platforms and their operations
- Knowledge of journalistic principles and practices preferred
- Knowledge of English usage and of the requirements of press, radio and web publication required
- Knowledge of and experience with graphic design is preferred
- Ability to create clear, concise and accurate written communications
- Ability to prepare interesting and informative written communications involving technical or complex subject matter
