POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the University of California (UC) Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice Provost (VP) is a senior academic leader in the UC Office of the President responsible for all programs within Faculty Affairs and Academic Programs, an organization with more than 190 FTE and an annual budget of $70M, overseeing Academic Personnel policies.

The Vice Provost works in partnership with the Deputy Provost of Systemwide Academic Personnel to ensure appropriate policies and guidelines are in place across the system for UC's 75,000+ academic appointees, which include ladder-rank and equivalent faculty, postdoctoral scholars, lecturers, academic researchers, librarians, faculty administrators, and other academic appointees.

These policies range from tenure and promotion to academic freedom and beyond.

The Vice Provost is a key member of the UC System Provost and Executive Vice President's cabinet and works closely with the systemwide Academic Senate, fostering dialogue and policy development that expresses shared governance.

The VP reviews and provides advice to the UC Provost and Executive Vice President on personnel policies, compensation programs, and other areas impacting faculty.

Additionally, the VP serves as a spokesperson to the Regents, the Legislature, and external organizations as needed.

The VP jointly convenes the Vice Provosts / Vice Chancellors of Academic Personnel from all campuses, supporting and enhancing UC's approach to academic review, compensation, and advancement.

The VP co-leads systemwide Academic Senate-Administration workgroups and is involved in the administration of faculty discipline cases.

Responsibilities include oversight of several systemwide academic programs. The VP advocates for resources needed for these programs and reviews the performance of program leaders, including the California Digital Library (CDL), the UC Press, the President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (PPFP), and others.

The VP serves on governing boards, councils, and committees for each program and chairs ad-hoc working groups addressing signature issues for academic programs.

The position is a 100% appointment, full-time, fiscal year faculty administrator, for a five-year renewable term. The appointee will retain a 0% faculty position on one of the UC campuses.

If not a current University of California full professor, they will be recommended for a 0% faculty appointment.

This is a hybrid position requiring at least three days per week onsite in Oakland, CA, with periodic travel to UC campuses and various locations throughout California.

Professional Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience :

  • Full professor or academic credentials qualifying for appointment as a full professor in the UC Academic Senate.
  • Leadership experience in academic administration in roles such as Vice Provost, Vice Chancellor, Dean, Chair, or similar roles.
  • Track record of innovation in implementing solutions to complex problems.
  • Experience with academic personnel issues, including recruitment, retention, advancement, and diversity.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace.
  • Ability to lead and delegate in a multi-priority environment.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, including public speaking experience.
  • Commitment to furthering the University's public interest, academic, and research missions.

Preferred qualities include :

  • Experience managing a systemwide administrative office, including supervising staff and managing budgets.
  • Experience with union-represented academic populations.

Salary and Benefits :

A reasonable estimate for this position is $350,000 to $380,000.

The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role.
