Summary / TWC Summary JOB SUMMARY : The Assistant Director of Communications will lead communications for the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice.
This role manages both internal and external communications across institutional, community, and grant or corporate partnerships, and advocacy campaigns.
The Assistant Director of Communications is a key member of the Center’s communications team, as part of a broader strategy to inspire and motivate target audiences, and one who fosters and promotes sustainable and responsible environmental practices and behavior.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS : The Assistant Director of Communications is a highly collaborative, self-motivated, creative person that is adaptable to new processes with capacity to function independently.
The Assistant Director of Communications is also knowledgeable of environmental and climate justice issues and the issues directly impacting the communities in which the Center serves.
This is a Grant Funded position.
Essential Duties Summary
Summary
- Lead development of communications strategies that position the Bullard Center as a leader in environmental and climate justice
- Work directly with internal and external stakeholders, to help inform and shape initiatives, and serve as a well-versed and knowledgeable strategic advisor for all external communications.
- Serve as in-house communications liaison and maintain a working knowledge of the Bullard Center’s position on related and current issues
- Responsible for managing the Bullard Center’s thought leadership in areas through various communications strategies including the development of editorial content and social media, as well as communications content and materials for technically-related events.
- Lead communications strategies for joint programmatic work with partner organizations
- Manage or Collaborate communications strategies to include : content development with the support of in-house support staffasset development in collaboration with the external communications specialistspeaking engagements and eventssocial mediastakeholder outreachCollaborate with TSU Marketing and Communications team on key announcements and media moments
- Work closely with the Director and internal staff to provide input into media strategy related to Bullard Center initiatives
- Perform other duties and take on other responsibilities as required according to the Center’s needs and ongoing projects

Knowledge of :
- Drafting Press Releases and blog articles
- Organizing Press Conferences
- Media Training
Skill in :
- Demonstrated success in conceptualizing, developing, implementing, and managing communications strategies, particularly focused on public policy and advocacy efforts
- Strong organizational and communications skills, both verbal and written
- Critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills
- Excellent ability to build internal and external relationships
- Experience working with external partners and communities
- Familiarity with public policy
- Strong project management skills with proven ability to work as part of a high-level, multi-dimensional team
- Comfortable interacting with personnel at all levels
- Demonstrated experience in relationship and partnership development
- Working knowledge of environmental and climate justice is preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required
- Ability to travel nationally and internationally

Ability to :
- Independently use technology, virtual meeting platforms, and social media
- Ability to learn and adapt to new processes
- Design flyers, infographics and content for marketing purposes
- Develop verbiage and coordinate mass, social, and print media marketing campaigns
- Work outside of normal business hours, including nights and weekends
Work Experience
Five years of communications experience preferred.
