This is a grant funded Full time Faculty position, located in Washington County at the Don Tyson School of Innovation. Preferential review of applicants begins two weeks after initial posting.

When an individual accepts a teaching appointment at NorthWest Arkansas Community College, in the Practical Nursing Program, he or she also accepts responsibilities and obligations as a professional educator.

Under the supervision of the Department chair, faculty have as their chief duty, the instruction of assigned classes. This duty takes precedence over all others.

In addition to their teaching responsibilities, faculty should assume responsibility for professional development, service to the college, and other duties as assigned by their supervisors.

They are also obligated to abide by and support college policies as set forth in the College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, Employment Memorandum, and Administrative Procedures Manual.

Faculty must be committed to the learning college philosophy as well as the goals and objectives of Northwest Arkansas Community College.

Meeting the essential duties and responsibilities of this position is expected to require at least 40 hours a week on average, including work on and off campus, during the contract period.

Much of faculty work occurs at designated times each week (such as classes, office hours, meetings, etc.). However, the very nature of the workload of a professional educator at the college level means that the hours a faculty member fulfills his or her non-scheduled responsibilities are based on each individual's judgment.

Since the college offers learning opportunities around the clock, seven days a week, and because much of faculty work can be accomplished off campus, an 8 to 5, Monday through Friday schedule is impractical.

A typical faculty work schedule varies from semester to semester (scheduled responsibilities) and week to week (non-scheduled responsibilities) to best accommodate student learning, professional development, and service to the college.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following list of duties applies to a typical NWACC faculty member. Please note that some faculty positions include a combination of teaching and administrative or service duties, as noted below.

Instruction

Facilitate student learning, provide effective instruction, and perform evaluations of student learning for all assigned classes, using each course's standard course outline as a guide.

The basic instructional assignment is thirty (30) load hours per academic year for 9-month faculty. However, 30 hours is not applicable to each program or to 9.

5, 10, or 12-month faculty. Furthermore, a number of faculty positions include a combination of teaching and administrative or service duties.

On occasion faculty may receive a reduced instructional load to complete other duties related to the function of the college.

Each semester's instructional load will be assigned by the faculty member's supervisor, which will be determined by the nature of the position, the needs of the department, and workload guidelines established by college policy.

  • Develop course curriculum, course handouts, lectures, labs, and presentations.
  • Participate in program level learning assessment. Participation includes helping articulate learning outcomes, choosing and administering measures, evaluating student performance, and suggesting changes to improve student learning.
  • Work with other faculty and administrators in developing program curriculum, standards, and policies, including reviewing and participating in textbook selection process where appropriate.
  • Schedule, supervise, debrief, and evaluate students in clinical, internship, observation, field experience, and similar settings as appropriate for the course or program.
  • Be available to students via email, phone, or personal conferences. The method of contact and hours of availability should be clearly communicated to supervisors and to students through the course syllabus each semester.
  • Assign grades and maintain course / student records in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit grades and records by established deadlines.
  • Meet all classes and other scheduled responsibilities such as office hours and meetings at the designated times. A faculty member should inform the supervisor if he or she is unable to meet a class on time.

  • Keep a flexible weekly schedule that best facilitates student learning and access. Any changes in the scheduled class times or locations should have prior approval by the faculty's supervisor.
  • Examples of the various ways faculty keep flexible schedules to accommodate student learning from week to week could include :
  • Late night or early morning preparation of lab materials or activities.
  • Organizing, rehearsing, and hosting musical or dramatic performances or other events.
  • Arranging and conducting on-site clinical or internship experiences.
  • Planning and supervising field trips.
  • Keeping weekend and / or late night online office hours or online discussions.
  • Conducting special review sessions outside of scheduled class times.
  • Accommodating student make-up work.
  • Spending extended periods grading exams or assignments to allow prompt feedback to students.

Professional Development

  • Participate in summative and formative faculty evaluation process.
  • Remain current in academic or program discipline, including maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate.
  • Receive training or stay current in technological or pedagogical advances that promote student learning.
  • Participate in college professional development activities.

Service to the College

  • Help students identify and achieve their educational goals through participating in the college's advising process, as well as providing incidental academic advice to students in classes.
  • Post and keep on campus hours to facilitate interaction with students, other faculty, staff, administrators, and the public.
  • Serve on standing ad hoc committees, advisory boards, hiring committees, faculty senate, or as a student organization advisor.
  • Attend local, regional, state, or national meetings where required or necessary for the discipline.
  • Mentor and assist in orienting new faculty, either formally or informally where appropriate or required by department or division.
  • Attend commencement or other ceremonies appropriate to the faculty member's discipline or program.
  • Attend departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings where appropriate or as required by supervisor.
  • Perform other academically-related duties as assigned by instructor's supervisor.

Rate of pay : determined by faculty scale placement (education and years of experience)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the organization and administration of various higher education academic

and social programs.

Knowledge of campus and community resources.

Knowledge of state, federal, and campus rules, regulations, and requirements related to

campus academic and social programs.

Ability to coordinate the activities of campus academic and / or social programs.

Ability to evaluate collected information and formulate into recommendations.

Ability to compile information into report form.

In addition to the aforementioned descriptions, requirements for full-time nursing faculty include :

  • Holding a current, unencumbered registered nurse license to practice in Arkansas.
  • Having previous experience in clinical nursing.
  • Bachelor's of Nursing degree..
  • Two years clinical experience.
  • Clinical teaching experience.
  • Classroom teaching experience (at least one year preferred).
  • Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills.
  • Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession.
  • Current knowledge of contemporary practice.
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook , Blackboard or similar Distance Learning Platform.
