Description

Employees at this level perform direct patient care that requires highly specialized nursing skills and supervise the performance of other patient care activities in an assigned area.

They work under general supervision from a designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties

Employees in this title typically -

  • demonstrates a high degree of competence in the practice of nursing skills peculiar to a clinical department and supervises other members of the nursing staff in the performance of procedures and techniques.
  • identifies nursing care needs of a patient group, correlates related principles of care, and establishes care priorities.
  • evaluates staff's capacities and achievements in relation to established position descriptions, develops broad patient care plans, and makes and adjusts personnel assignments designed to implement those plans .
  • interviews patients and develops nursing care plans based on conclusions drawn from data; directs staff members in utilizing plans and evaluates the effectiveness of these plans;

and consults with staff members to redesign plans.

  • identifies the need for investigating nursing care practices; develops protocol for and conducts studies concerning nursing procedures and techniques.
  • evaluates the effectiveness of policies and procedures as they relate to area of assignment; recommends the need for interpretation, revision, or elimination and assists personnel in understanding and applying policies and procedures.
  • plans and directs broad areas of patient management and required nursing care activities for one or more wards or segments of a ward.
  • prepares for therapeutic procedures in a specialized segment of patient care and supervises nursing personnel involved in implementing those procedures.
  • renders expert nursing care that focuses upon a highly specialized segment of the patient's total therapeutic program.
  • identifies the need for other specialized nursing skills in the care of a patient and informs appropriate members of the nursing team.
  • develops patient teaching plans, instructs patients, guides other staff members in patient's teaching plan, and assists the patient's family to participate in the patient's teaching plan .
  • in the absence of a member of the Administrative Nursing group, administers the patient care activities of a ward.
  • performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • One year of nursing experience comparable to that gained as a Staff Nurse I.

Illinois Residency Requirement : Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

About Civil Service Examination / Testing : The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions.

No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam.

If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination / testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score.

This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.

  • Describe your specific work experience assessing, recommending, initiating, administering, and documenting medications and treatments as indicated / ordered;

  • Describe your specific work experience managing medical records by reviewing physician's orders; transcribing orders onto chart;
  • recording progress and activity notes; recording information pertinent to patient communication by telephone in the medical record;
  • recording the patient's history information, vital signs, and chief complaint(s) in the record; recording all symptoms pertaining to illness or injury;

and / or completing accident reports.

  • Describe your specific work experience providing patient instructions and rehabilitation; formulating a teaching plan; planning assignments of nursing personnel to implement these goals;
  • guiding other staff members in patient teaching; evaluating the patient's or family's understanding of and response to the teaching plan;

assisting the patient's family to participate in the patient's teaching plan; and / or instructing the patient in methods to self evaluate the response to the plan.

  • Describe your specific work experience supervising patient care activities; supervising nursing personnel; explaining departmental and unit policies and procedures;
  • assisting personnel in understanding and applying policies and procedures; evaluating capacities and achievements to select and delegate patient care assignments;

directing in utilizing plans; and / or evaluating effectiveness of policies, procedures, and personnel utilizing plans.

Describe your specific work experience participating in the training and education of residents, medical students, and new employees;

participating in reviewing of quality of care of patient.
