I. Major Responsibilities :
- Performs duties using recovery-oriented principles.
- Demonstrates person-centered strength-based communication and relationships with clients.
- Demonstrates effective communication with staff, peers, and other professionals.
- Ability to observe, document, teach, and respond to mental and physical health needs of clients.
- Serves as a residential counselor for specified number of residents as directed.
- Assists in creating a safe therapeutic milieu by fostering a culture of recovery.
- Implements treatment plans, interventions, and properly documents using progress / service notes.
- Assists with the client admission process by completing all required documentation accurately.
- Searches clients and their belongings for contraband upon admission and as required.
- Works with clients to assist with activities of daily living (ADLs).
- Ensures healthy menu planning, food shopping, and meal preparation through coordination and assistance.
- Monitors clients' medication and assists with attending appointments.
- Works with clients to maintain the residence on a daily basis including chores and light housekeeping duties.
- May be required to provide physical assistance and close supervision.
- Maintains and complies with regulations as applicable for DMH, HUD, BSAS, and DPH.
- Assists individuals with intervention work as outlined in their treatment plans.
- Leads skill development and / or other groups as assigned.
- Redirects clients as needed to provide a safe environment.
- Provides crisis intervention and support.
- Performs program cleaning, including laundry and clerical work as assigned.
- Notifies supervisor of any identified problem or deficiency in the program.
- Reviews resident records, medication logs, and treatment plans for completeness and accuracy as assigned.
- Answers telephone in a professional manner while documenting all relevant information.
- Monitors client location and condition per program regulations.

- Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications :
License / Certification / Education :
Required :
- Residential Counselor I : Minimum of a high school diploma / GED / HiSet required.
- Residential Counselor II : Requires a Bachelor's degree; preferably in psychology or human services.
- Driving Requirements :
- Current valid US-Issued driver's license for specific programs.
- Must be able to pass a CORI background check.
Preferred :
- Associates degree.
- Certification in addiction counseling or a minimum of 2 years' experience in the substance abuse field.
Experience / Skills :
Required :
- Understanding of addiction and recovery.
- Demonstrates person-centered strength-based communication.
- Demonstrates effective communication with staff, peers, and other professionals.
- Ability to observe, document, teach, and respond to mental and physical health needs.
- Awake Overnight Residential Counselors : Must remain awake and alert during the overnight shift.
Preferred :
Previous human services experience.
Department-specific competencies will be developed and maintained in individual departments.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions :
Work is considered medium. May be required to lift up to 10 lbs frequently and up to 20 lbs occasionally. Work is indoors in a patient-facing environment.
