About the Job

The University of Minnesota Supplier Diversity Business Development Manager position is responsible for outreach into the community for the Office for Supplier Diversity and supporting suppliers as they prepare to work with the University.

This position reports directly to the Director of the Office for Supplier Diversity and requires extensive management skill set including experience and working knowledge of supplier diversity concepts, the ability to build strong community relationships, and data management.

The Business Development manager will work with supplier diversity staff to identify opportunities to engage new BIPOC-, women-, and disabled-owned businesses (Targeted Businesses) to do business with the University in buying categories that are currently underrepresented by diverse suppliers.

The manager will also develop and implement programs for Targeted Businesses that will provide the support services or network-building opportunities needed to move them toward contracting with University buyers.

Job Duties :

  • Outreach and Business Development (60%) :
  • Engage with the external community as the representative for the Office for Supplier Diversity.
  • Bring in new Targeted Businesses for inclusion in the Targeted Business Directory.
  • Build relationships with trade organizations in construction and other goods / services categories to identify ways to support Targeted Business suppliers and bring them into the University supply chain.
  • Provide ongoing support to Targeted Businesses who want to contract with the University. This support could include the creation and management of networking opportunities, mentorship programs, training seminars, and consultative services.
  • Use business expertise and strategies to coach and counsel Targeted Business owners.
  • Restart old and design new programs that will help Targeted Businesses advance their ability to contract with University buyers.
  • Provide training to Targeted Businesses on the University's supplier diversity processes and resources.
  • Together with the Supplier Diversity Goods & Services and Construction Managers, introduce Targeted Businesses to appropriate internal purchasing decision-makers.
  • Together with the Program Specialist, grow awareness of the Office for Supplier Diversity programs and resources through monthly newsletters, website, and social media.
  • Internal Engagement with University Stakeholders (30%) :
  • Engage with University stakeholders to enhance their interest in working with Targeted Businesses.
  • Other duties as assigned to support supplier diversity initiatives (10%) :
  • Support the Executive Director in advancing initiatives, projects and programs including but not limited to compiling data and research.
  • Participate in the design, marketing, promotion, and delivery of inclusion programs.

Pay Range

$82,042-$86,000

Qualifications

Required Qualifications :

  • Requires BA / BS with at least six years of experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills : ability to manage and resolve conflict in a collaborative and respectful way plus demonstrated networking and outreach capabilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience in, and an ongoing commitment to, working effectively with and across diverse communities including people of color;
  • underrepresented groups, new immigrant populations; people with both visible and invisible disabilities; women; people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions;

and individuals from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • Proficiency using Google Workspace and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Software.
  • Must be able to attend events and meetings in Twin Cities metro area and occasionally in greater MN. Must be able to travel to outstate conferences at least twice a year.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • At least 8 years of business development experience.
  • Substantial experience working on supplier diversity programs or in closely related fields.
  • Substantial experience working with business development and community relationships and partnerships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to establish working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a large, complex institution with multiple departments and business units with competing interests.
  • Proficiency using Salesforce and Smartcomp software.
