Position Focus :
Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Fabrication Shop Manager is responsible for the operations and safety protocols of the metals equipment at the 36 Edgewood Fabrication Shop at the School of Art.
The Fabrication Shop Manager will have a focus on the metals area, and co-manage the entire shop areas alongside another Fabrication Shop Manager with expertise in the wood area, to provide equipment / shop training to students, oversee the daily operation of the fabrication shops, maintain and repair equipment, and provide support to students with specific shop and fabrication needs across all four departments at the School of Art.
Students work on a variety of art projects across media in the Fabrication Shop, sometimes for installation in critique and gallery spaces throughout the School.
Two shop managers co-manage Shop and Student Monitors. The Fabrication Shop Manager orders and maintains materials, supplies, tools, and equipment.
They will regularly interface with Facilities, Yale’s Offices of Environmental Health and Safety and Risk Management (EHS), as well as the Yale Fire Marshal on compliance and in relation to special projects and activities.
The goal of the Edgewood Fabrication Shop is to promote and maintain a safe and healthy working environment within an actively inclusive pedagogy a shared space in which all students feel welcomed to explore various fabrication mediums.
The Shop Manager may lead workshops about fabrication techniques and applications when necessary.
Maintain a clean, well-kept, and safe shop. This involves delegating daily cleaning tasks such as vacuuming spaces and machines, sweeping, organizing, and emptying the dust collector to student monitors and Shop Technicians in an organized fashion.
Maintain tools and equipment and establish and perform maintenance routines, including inspection and upkeeps of abrasives and consumables.
Major maintenance and repair that cannot be performed by the Shop Managers should be reported and addressed in cooperation with EHS and Facilities.
Regularly check with EHS to address safety concerns. Respond to EHS inspections in a timely manner and resolve EHS violations.
Facilitate student training during orientation week for students in all four departments who wish to use the shop. Co-manage additional CPR and EHS trainings for Sculpture students and all Student Monitors.
Order individual PPE. Schedule and conduct additional training as necessary throughout the year. Perform tool specific student training throughout the year.
Create an environment in which shop rules are upheld out of respect for the space. Work as a team to help all students with their projects and delegate shop upkeep clearly between team members.
Create a schedule with the Shop team including the Shop Technicians and Student Monitors, including modified schedules during academic breaks.
Manage work study hours and budget and approve student monitor weekly timesheets. Work with the Facilities Director to ensure that Monitors have key card access to the shop doors, shop office, and power main during open hours.
Update and maintain the Fabrication Shop Student Scheduling system to enhance the efficient and safe operation for students, staff, and faculty.
Update the scheduling system for tool loaning and general shop operation system.
Supervise shop spaces over the academic year breaks (summer, winter). Lead safety incident investigations, work with key stakeholders with implementing corrective actions to ensure compliance.
Monitor the shop annual budget to ensure the budget compliance in each category and that the purchases listed are accurate.
Maintain and order supplies as needed for the Fabrication Shop. Develop a system for communicating supply needs. Create and maintain 3-5 year budgetary plans for upgrades to the Shop.

Essential Duties

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and three years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill / Ability 1 :
Proven knowledge of best practices and methods in metal, wood, and other art fabrication techniques, with an emphasis on metal fabrication.
Required Skill / Ability 2 :
Proven knowledge and ability to work with and maintain a range of power and hand tools used in metalworking, including Mig welder, Tig welder, Stick welder, horizontal and vertical bandsaws, drill press, disc grinder, belt sander, hydraulic shear, hydraulic tubing bender, tubing roller, cnc plasma cutter, pneumatic and electric hand tools, and sandblaster.
Required Skill / Ability 3 :
Proficiency in hot and cold fabrication processes and familiarity with maintenance of the metal fabrication equipment, including welders, cutting and forming tools are needed.
Knowledge in foundry process and finishing is also important. Welding certification and safety certification is a plus. Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA standards and guidelines.

Excellent leadership capabilities; comfort providing oversight of team members, ability to initiate strategies, policies and procedures.
Superior communication skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and other professionals.
Demonstrated experience working with and understanding the needs of artists.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Sufficient knowledge of the fabrication processes and hands-on experience demonstrating competence working with wood and / or metal fabrication tools.
Proven supervisory experience. Proven experience overseeing fabrication shops. OSHA-10 Certification. Working knowledge of CAD programs and computer controlled tools such as a CNC router.
