Pay Tier : 4

Compensation : Minimum of $20.00 / hour for each contracted project that is 8-10 weeks long each throughout the 2024 / 2025 academic season

Summary

The Brown / Trinity Rep MFA Program is seeking, non-equity, part-time, stage managers for a number of productions scheduled in our upcoming 2024 / 2025 academic season.

Our projects range from smaller studio productions to fully produced main-stage productions complete with full design teams and tech process.

The average length of each contract is between 8-10 weeks long. Weekly time commitments and salary vary according to the length and scope of each project;

a minimum of $20 per hour for each project.

Our Stage Managers are central to our projects. They are the hub of communication between the student director, student actors, professional designers (when applicable), and production departments.

They ensure a safe working environment during rehearsals and call cues during performances. Candidates should be able to work calmly and efficiently with others.

Priority is given at all times to creating and sustaining an equitable and inclusive environment. Must be based in the Southern New England area - housing and transportation not provided.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Works with the production manager to ensure calendar, schedules, and conflicts are up-to-date
  • Communicates call times and meetings to actors, directors, and crew
  • Sends out daily calls and reports to ensure that the director's notes are being shared with designers and staff
  • Records blocking for the director
  • Ensures rehearsals run safely and on track
  • Ensures breaks are taken at established intervals
  • Coordinates the work of the stage crew (when applicable)
  • Supervises preshow activities such as fight calls, technical, and safety checks (when applicable)
  • Calls cues and entrances during performances (when applicable)
  • When possible, participates in post-show process debriefs with the production team and supporting faculty

  • Ability to work long weeks and evening / weekend hours are typically required when running tech / previews and for assigned projects when on show call
  • Basic knowledge of various technical elements of theater (lights, sound, props, sets, etc.)
  • Detail oriented, organized and fastidious
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with a wide variety of artists, technicians, and administrators
  • Must commit to work in a production department centered in anti-racist policies and practices, and to foster and sustain a culture that values community, social justice, and equity
  • Excellent follow-through and attention to detail
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure

Education and / or Experience

High school diploma plus a minimum of two years backstage and carpentry experience.

Technical / Computer Skills

Knowledge of theatrical production practices and procedures. Familiarity with COVID-19 Safety regulations.

Knowledge of backstage equipment and activities during the run of a theatrical performance

Good written and verbal communication skills

Familiarity with computers running Windows / Microsoft Office and email for work use

Language Skills

Must be an excellent communicator with the ability to communicate transparently and effectively across mediums. The ability and passion to work inclusively with all ages and diverse populations.

Certifications

Valid driver's license is a plus
