To begin approximately December 1, 2024, subject to position clearance and availability of funds. The first review begins October 4, 2024, with continuous recruitment until filled.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Participate in strategic planning with the JABSOM Dean and designees (e.g., Associate Deans, Department Chairs and faculty practice plan leadership) relevant to the development of the department of Surgery and collaboration with the Queen’s University Medical Group (QUMG), providing a unique clinical faculty perspective;
- Oversee the development of principles and processes to guide the strengthening of academic surgery across the state for faculty recruitment, GME program evaluation and operation, and similar academic endeavors within the Queen’s Health Systems (QHS), Hawai i Pacific Health, and other core clinical learning environments in JABSOM affiliated clinical sites;
- Assist with the development of clinical research and service program development designed to strengthen the innovative delivery of health care within QHS, with a focus on the disciplines of surgery;
- Assist with the maintenance of accreditation standards set by LCME and ACGME for surgical education based within all clinical affiliate sites;
- Develop appropriate reporting mechanisms regarding mission alignment and progress in developing academic surgery faculty and programs within the QUMG in conjunction with JABSOM dean and designees;
- Oversee clinical quality improvement initiatives, curriculum development, and faculty evaluations;
- Practice clinical surgery in conjunction with Hawai i’s health systems;
- Serve as principal investigator for clinical services grant or contract proposals;
- Oversee evaluation reports for clinical, academic, and administrative services;
- Align departmental vision and mission with that of John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM);
- Serve as a mentor for students, residents, fellows, and faculty and promote a robust clinical faculty development program based on M- or H-series promotion goals;
- Oversee and contribute to the organization and administration of educational or training experiences for medical students, residents, or fellows;
- Participate in continuing medical education programs;
- Conduct and publish research in areas affecting human health, patient care, or medical education methods and techniques;
- Build a vigorous departmental research program with extramural funding;
- Work with affiliate organizations and specialized groups to advance the goals and mission of the department and JABSOM;
- May serve in leadership roles within the Department of Surgery;
- May serve in leadership roles within QUMG;
- Serve on University committees;
MD or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school.
- Board certification in general surgery and recertification when appropriate.
- Graduate of an AGCME-accredited general surgery residency program.
- Eligible for unrestricted Hawai’i Medical License.
- A minimum of four (4) years at the rank of Associate Professor, four years of other medical experience, or one year in the rank of Professor at another accredited medical school.
- Evidence of instruction, scholarship, service that meets JABSOM’s H faculty criteria for the rank of Professor.
- Demonstrated academic and clinical leadership capacity in an academic surgery department.
- Recognition as an outstanding academician, scholar, or clinician with a national and / or international reputation.
