Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION :

Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Nursing or designee is responsible for 24-hour administrative, clinical operation, and care coordination of the assigned units(s).

S / he is accountable for supervision of nursing staff as well as for enforcing staff adherence to established policies, procedures, and ensuring that the standards of nursing practice are in alignment with the organizational, regulatory, and nationally recognized professional standards and evidence-based practice.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Identifies, interprets, and evaluates patient care needs through continuous surveillance, patient rounding, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team
  • References hospital and nursing strategic plans to forecast, monitor, and evaluate the organization's viability in meeting the needs of individual and community clientele
  • Prioritizes patient safety; identifies, manages / escalates issues of safety appropriately
  • Assigns responsibilities and delegate authority to qualified staff based on the skills competency, knowledge, and abilities of personnel
  • Participates in hiring and assignment of appropriate nursing personnel and is responsible for periodic evaluation of staff performance
  • Responsible for an active Quality Improvement Program, tracking, trending, analysis, and implementation of corrective action and evaluating results
  • Analyzes need and interdisciplinary health care delivery in assigned specialty through and active Performance Improvement Program
  • Fosters cohesive and effective team working relationship between medical, nursing, and ancillary support staff
  • Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary team in coordinating care across clinical services
  • Collaborates with education department in supporting the professional development of staff by encouraging and monitoring continuing education activities of the nursing staff
  • Investigates and follows through with all occurrences / incidents and patient complaints promptly; collaborates with the interdisciplinary team in investigating / resolving incidents.
  • Participates in departmental and hospital-wide committee meetings; disseminates meeting reports among staff and peers as appropriate.
  • Conducts periodic staff meetings; maintains record of meeting agenda and attendance.
  • Maintains familiarity with regulatory agency standards relative to assigned area.
  • Participates in nursing policy and standards revision; ensures staff education on new / revised policies / standards.
  • Assist with the planning and development of patient / family education programs.
  • Participates in budget review of the assigned clinical specialty.
  • Promotes transition of care : enforces patient / family education, discharge and follow-up instructions, and handoff reporting as appropriate.
  • Promotes a culture of engagement by creating an environment where staff thrive, and feel enabled to contribute to positive patient / family experience.

  • Fosters the foundation of collaboration among staff and supports a shared governance environment
  • Encourages and accommodates the participation of staff in shared governance committees
  • Actively engages staff for discussion and inputs relate to resource allocation and cost management
  • Supports staff during times of organizational change or change in leadership
  • Continuously strive to increase core knowledge and role competency through leadership development activities (provide documentation of educational activities attended from previous year)
  • Includes and discusses in-house nursing quality indicator outcomes / reports in staff meetings (part of meeting agenda) with strategies to improve such outcomes (provide documentation)
  • Reviews quarterly NDNQI clinical reports with staff, identifies indicators needing improvement and develops strategies to improve such indicators (provide documentation)
  • Knowledgeable with the six (6) Pathway to Excellence standards and the different elements of performance under each standard
  • Participates in peer-to-peer performance feedback / review and uses these feedback (and that of staff's) as opportunities for improvement
  • Uses mistakes as learning opportunities, not criticism
  • Promotes a culture of day-to-day recognition and creates an environment where everyone understands the value of recognizing each other on any given day (for both big and small contributions)
  • Listens and supports staff in decision-making even if the conflict is with a physician
  • Includes Pathway as a standing agenda in all huddles and staff meetings

Minimum Qualifications

1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.

2. Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity;

or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.

3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
