The Safety Coordinator is responsible to work with the entire work force at Banker Steel's facility in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The Safety Coordinator is responsible for the daily safety management, health awareness and environmental compliance and overall well-being of our workforce and assets.
The Safety Coordinator reports directly to the Banker Steel Safety Director and works closely with the Plant Manager and staff.
The main objective is to expeditiously manage all safety hazards through individual and collective engagement and ownership of company safety policies and programs.
This role requires that the Safety Coordinator be a hands-on problem solver spending 75% of the time on the shop floor.
Essential Functions
- Implements, and coordinates program, training, and activities to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths and associated financial losses.
- Identifies and appraises conditions which could produce accidents and financial losses and evaluates potential extent of injuries resulting from accidents
- Identifies safety hazards in various areas of our fabrication shops and promotes engagement by all employees in doing the same
- Develops accident-prevention and loss-control programs and prepares Root Cause Analysis and training to proactively eliminate repeat occurrences
- Conducts quality safety orientation for all new hire employees.
- Conducts and promotes others to conduct documented safety audits including corrective solution and actions for hazard identification and elimination
- Trains employees on site specific hazards such as Fall protection, aerial lifts, forklifts, and other tasks as necessary.
- Trains employees in behavioral based risk analysis, communications, awareness and elimination of hazardous behavior
- Conducts pertinent weekly safety meetings with all shop employees, and assists supervisors with daily tool box talks and safety discussions
- Maintains current and accurate MSDS / SDS file for all materials on site
- Ensures that corrective action is initiated by foreman responsible for that area and provides assistance as needed for quality hazard elimination
- Evaluates hazardous conditions and works with supervision to eliminate the hazards.
- Maintains safety compliance within OSHA, Company, and Client Standards.
- Provides technical assistance to supervision on safety related matters
- Conducts, injury, property damage and near miss investigation to eliminate repeat occurrences and hazard elimination
- Maintain a positive pro-active relationship with employees, supervision, and management.
- Maintains liaison with government agencies such as OSHA, DOT, EPA, along with other regulatory agencies
- Additional duties and responsibilities as needed

- Working Knowledge of Microsoft Office (excel, word, powerpoint, etc.) and other cloud-based software.
Specialized Knowledge
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Two-years experience working in a Safety Professional role preferred
- Legal to work in the USA
- Must be bi-lingual : English / Spanish
