The current vacancy is located at the Carlsbad and Bonita Animal Shelters.

Future Salary Increases

June 2024 6.88% increase to base pay (2.75% Across-the-Board + 4.13% Market Increase)

In addition to the base salary, employees receive :

  • $850 annual uniform allowance
  • $300 annual safety footwear reimbursement allowance (may accrue up to 3 years’ worth of reimbursement)
  • Overtime pay for working County-observed holidays
  • At least 2 paid days per year to attend Continuing Education Unit (CEU) classes
  • Reimbursement of Registered Veterinary Technician license renewal

THIS POSITION IS ELIGIBLE FOR APPOINTMENT AT STEP 1, $54,496.00 ANNUALLY.

County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for Step Placement in Accordance with Compensation Ordinance 1.3.5.

The County of San Diego, Department of Animal Services is currently hiring for a Registered Veterinary Technician to work at our County Shelters.

Each shelter has a medical division that consists of Veterinarians and Registered Veterinary Technicians who provide medical and surgical services for the animals within the Department's care.

Shelter medicine is all about the animals, their health and their welfare. Interested candidates should show a commitment to quality care and have a compassion for animals and humans alike.

UPCOMING* Registered Veterinary Technicians will have an opportunity to be a part of a mobile surgical unit to provide spay / neuter and basic wellness services to targeted communities.

Initial mobile unit outreach based on current shelter intake will offer targeted services in the Spring Valley, Lakeside, Ramona, and Fallbrook communities, with additional areas to be added as needed.

HIRING PROCESS AND TIMELINE :

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins : Shortly after the interviews. Note : Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening : Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date : Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A current registration in the state of California as a Registered Veterinary Technician.

Note : One (1) year of experience in an animal hospital and / or public animal control agency is highly desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed outdoors and in animal shelter environments in varying temperatures; exposure to excessive noise, animal waste, dead animals, sewage, and zoonotic diseases;

may work shifts, weekends and holidays at animal shelters throughout the County of San Diego.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT :

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment.

Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.

EVALUATION PROCESS

Qualified candidates will be placed on a nine (9) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications.
