Job Description

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has an opening for a Research Specialist II in the Carroll A. Campbell, Jr.

Neuropathology Laboratory (Brain Bank). This position requires a well-organized, highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills.

Pay Scale Salary Range : UNIV-Band 5 : - - (min - mid - max)

MUSC Minimum Requirements : A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science and one year work experience directly related to the assigned research area.

Job Duties :

  • 35% - Assist with the procurement and processing of tissue and fluid samples. Assist with histologic tasks, including preparing and staining tissue for microscopic examination. (Essential)
  • 20% - Work with investigators who are performing cutting-edge research that is focused on the study of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Assist with experiments and help prepare experimental results for presentations and publications. (Essential)

15% - Perform administrative functions related to Brain Bank operations. Tasks include completing family reports for all concluded cases, maintaining electronic records for all cases, requesting donor medical records, answering phones, updating and maintaining records and databases, and completing NACC data forms for all cases.

Communicate with family members regarding donor history and medical records. Assist with obtaining verbal consent from next of kin for procedures and coordinating donor transportation. (Essential)

15% - Perform basic lab maintenance responsibilities including glassware washing, solution making and laboratory organization.

The research specialist will be responsible for keeping track of stocks of essential items like personal protective equipment, reagents, and other lab supplies.

Ensure lab equipment and freezers are in working order. Help maintain an inventory of reagents, supplies, and equipment in the lab. - (Essential)

  • 5% - Work with investigators requesting tissue and fluid samples from the Brain Bank for research projects. Maintain record of grants and projects using Brain Bank samples. (Essential)
  • 5% - Perform internal audits of tissue and fluid samples. Ensure all samples are stored in the correct location in the appropriate conditions.

Report issues as needed. (Essential)

5% - Perform other related duties. (Essential)
