The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Associate Director provides leadership within the Tow Center for Digital Journalism across events and publishing, working as part of the leadership team at the Center to create a high impact for the work of our Fellows and faculty.

This position is contingent on performance and the continuance of external funding.

Responsibilities

Strategically plan and establish the publishing agenda for the Tow Center in consultation with the Director and Program Director.

Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the role of the Tow Center, its outputs, areas of study and the place of the Tow Center within the School.

  • Manage publishing processes across a number of platforms, including academic publishing, newsletters, social platforms, and be able to manage partnerships with third-party publishers (such as the Columbia Journalism Review).
  • Manage deliverables of fellows, research staff, and associated faculty to deadlines, oversee the editing process required for different formats, and develop appropriate new formats where possible.
  • Monitor the metrics and impact of all events and publications, to allow for evaluation and development in consultation with the Director and the Program Director.
  • Organize, coordinate, and plan a calendar of events, to foster public and student engagement in line with the aims of the center and stated goals of the research agenda.
  • Assess the progress of research grants in creating impact, and delivering high-quality outputs that meet consistently high academic and journalistic standards.

This means familiarity with the Internal Review Board process and working with the research director, editors, and fellows to ensure compliance where relevant.

  • Create compelling student and faculty-focused events and materials, and help strategize how to optimize engagement with the Journalism School, and other Schools and departments within the University.
  • Stand in for the Program Director in most circumstances, in their absence.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 4-6 years related experience
  • Knowledge of the current challenges presented to journalism by the rise of generative AI, the challenges to the sustainability of journalism, the threat posed by and techniques employed by propagandists and spreaders of misinformation, etc.
  • Must be highly organized, motivated, flexible, able to balance multiple competing demands, and provide high-quality, timely support.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, academic units, faculty, graduate students, and staff.
  • Excellent communication skills, as well as energy, initiative, and ability to think strategically. Ability to work with ambiguous project conditions and must be comfortable with quickly shifting priorities.
