Reports to the Manager. Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, performs various clerical and patient care duties.
Responsibilities include assisting the physician and / or nurse in support of medical care, answering the telephone, admitting and discharging patients, and performing data entry.

Performs routine clerical duties in accordance with established policies and procedures by :
- Receiving and greeting all patients and visitors in a professional manner and providing all reasonable assistance.
- Receiving telephone calls, taking and relaying messages accurately.
- Obtaining information from the patient to accurately complete the patient record.
- Maintaining patient files, charts, and records for the department.
- Conducting insurance verification and precertification (Bariatric Center only).
Performs patient care duties as directed by the physician or nurse by :
- Recording medical history.
- Preparing patient for examination.
- Assisting physician and / or nurse with clinical procedures.
- Performing routine laboratory and other tests as ordered and collecting specimens for the lab.
- Administering and recording medication and injections as ordered.
- Interpreting physician's instructions to patients and providing instruction to patients.
- Checking and maintaining supply of stock for department.
- Cleaning instruments and equipment.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by :
- Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
- Cross training within the department.
- Travel to multiple Beacon Health facilities as required.

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements :
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license / certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position / department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Must be a minimum of 17 years of age. The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of an approved Medical Assistant Program or equivalent work experience with successful completion of the Certification Exam is preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates with related medical office experience. Must have valid driver's license as position requires traveling to Beacon facilities.
Knowledge & Skills
- Demonstrates knowledge of and competency in performing patient care procedures, observations, treatment and techniques utilized in department.
- Requires ability to perform venipuncture, and other clinical procedures as required by the department.
- Requires knowledge of billing and office procedures, filing, data entry, and competency with a computer, calculator, photocopier, etc.
- Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with patients, visitors and coworkers in a professional, courteous and friendly manner.

Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk / stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts / wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position / lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.
