SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Behavioral Health - Informatics

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing Informatics, the Assistant Director will perform all BH nursing informatics functions with the new electronic medical record (EMR) EPIC.

The purpose of this position is to develop, implement, and evaluate information technology needed to enhance the nursing practice environment as well as to serve as an educator / facilitator to meet staff information systems learning needs.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates nursing information system for the nursing division.
  • Conducts orientation of all levels of nursing staff to existing and developing information technology
  • Continually assess nursing staff learning needs and competence in the use of information technology
  • Serve as technical support for the Nursing Division
  • Implements and evaluates new technologies for safety, ease of use, cost effectiveness, and application to the patient care delivery system
  • Works with the staff to identify systems issues that impact on the care delivery system.
  • Facilitates interdisciplinary team approach to meeting technology needs in the division.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members in identifying and resolving nursing informatics issues
  • Reviews and recommends revisions, as needed, to unit specific policies and procedures based on evidence supported by recent research studies
  • Represents standards of nursing practice within the organization
  • Remains current with trends in nursing informatics and provides the staff with the resources and environment conducive to learning;

thereby, improving patient outcomes

  • Develops and implements a documentation system that identifies individual staff learning needs, competency evaluation, and educational activities related to information systems
  • Demonstrates professional responsibility to share knowledge by sharing knowledge with colleagues by presenting at conferences or publication
  • Facilitates change and fosters a positive image of nursing
  • Participates in evaluating, selecting and integrating new and improved technology and nursing information systems
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates new information systems for the department of nursing
  • Conducts orientation of all levels of nursing staff to existing and developing information technology
  • Continually assess nursing staff learning needs and competence in the use of information technology
  • Serve as technical support for the nursing department
  • Serve as KCHC liaison to NISA
  • Implements and evaluates new technologies for safety, ease of use, cost effectiveness, and application to the patient care delivery system
  • Works with the staff to identifier systems issues that impact on the care delivery system

Pathway to Excellence and Nursing Quality Requirements

  • Fosters the foundation of collaboration among staff and supports a shared-governance environment
  • Encourages and accommodates the participation of staff in shared governance committees
  • Actively engages staff for discussion and inputs relate to resource allocation and cost management
  • Supports staff during times of organizational change or change in leadership
  • Continuously strive to increase core knowledge and role competency through leadership development activities (provide documentation of educational activities attended from previous year)
  • Includes and discusses in-house nursing quality indicator outcomes / reports in staff meetings (part of meeting agenda) with strategies to improve such outcomes (provide documentation)
  • Reviews quarterly NDNQI clinical reports with staff, identifies indicators needing improvement and develops strategies to improve such indicators (provide documentation)
  • Knowledgeable with the six (6) Pathway to Excellence standards and the different elements of performance under each standard
  • Participates in peer-to-peer performance feedback / review and uses these feedback (and that of staffs) as opportunities for improvement
  • Uses mistakes as learning opportunities, not criticism
  • Promotes a culture of day-to-day recognition and creates an environment where everyone understands the value of recognizing each other on any given day (for both big and small contributions)
  • Listens and supports staff in decision-making even if the conflict is with a physician
  • Includes Pathway as a standing agenda in all huddles and staff meetings

Minimum Qualifications

1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.

2. Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity;

or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.

3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
