Location : 4822 N. Broadway, 5715 W. Belmont

Schedule : Monday to Friday (8 : 30am-5 : 00pm)

Summary :

Join Heartland Human Care Services (HHCS) as a Refugee Vocational English Language Training Coordinator, where you will play a key role in preparing newly-arrived refugees for the American workforce.

Under the guidance of the Supervisor of Vocational Training Programs, you’ll be responsible for co-developing, coordinating, and teaching job readiness classes that focus on strengthening English language skills and workforce preparedness.

This dynamic position is both participant-facing, where you’ll provide direct instruction, and a leadership role in recruiting and training volunteers and mentors.

Your efforts will directly expand and enhance vital services, helping refugees transition successfully into employment and self-sufficiency.

By collaborating with internal teams and external partners, you’ll have the opportunity to create meaningful pathways for refugees, offering them the skills and confidence to thrive in a new environment.

Reporting to the Supervisor of Vocational Training Programs, your success will be measured through the achievement of annual objectives that align with the mission and goals of HHCS.

Essential Functions

Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Sources and develops high-quality instructional materials and lesson plans to support the specific needs of a diverse group program participants, primarily refugees and asylees.
  • Recruits and enrolls participants as set out in annual success objectives, ensuring compliance with program eligibility guidelines.
  • Delivers culturally competent instruction, both online and in person, to program participants with special attention to literacy skills and the unique needs of individuals with interrupted formal education.
  • Develops and provides relevant life skills instruction to reduce barriers to employment including but not limited to public transportation ride-along, workplace tours, hands-on practice opportunities and digital literacy skills instruction.
  • Recruits, trains and mentors volunteers, program assistants, and guest speakers, including program graduates, to support participants during class and in early employment.
  • Tracks class attendance, participant engagement, and program outcomes, ensuring compliance with program goals, funding requirements and contractual agreements.
  • Communicates with program graduates at regular intervals throughout their early employment as defined by project funding requirements.
  • Consults regularly with colleagues, employer partners, refugee employment coalitions, other local and national refugee-specific employment programs, and experts in various career pathways to learn about best practices and support ongoing program improvement.
  • Collaborates with employment specialists and partnership developers to identify, cultivate, and establish external partnerships.
  • Maintains inventory of client support materials including but not limited to interview clothing, grooming kits, and transportation assistance.
  • Other duties may be assigned as it relates to the job performed.

Education and Experience :

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma is required.
  • Four (4) years of relevant experience working with refugee and resettlement populations is required.
  • Relevant lived experience in refugee resettlement or forced migration may be considered.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities (K / S / A) :

  • Multilingual skills strongly preferred.
  • Ability and comfortability working with diverse populations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder, and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to handle situations in a professional and diplomatic manner.
  • A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook / Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Human Care Services.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.

Work Arrangement :

This role is eligible for a hybrid or remote work arrangement. If hybrid, it is expected this person would be able to meet for in person meetings when needed or at the request of others.

In-person meetings may be required on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.). There may also be the availability to work from home when appropriate.

Work Environment :

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The employee may be required to work nights and weekends.
  • The employee may be required to remain on Organization premises during breaks and / or meal periods and may be required to stay on Organization premises until their replacement arrives.
