Job Profile Summary
The Shift Supervisor (SS) oversees the clinical operations of Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center on an assigned shift basis. The SS is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has been hired as a Staff Nurse in a department within MEMC and has shown by experience, knowledge, behavior, and job performance ability to fulfill the duties of the SS.
RNs are selected for participation in this role by the members of the nursing leadership team and are scheduled to act in the SS role on a rotating shift-by-shift basis.

Accountabilities
Oversight of Clinical Operations
Responsible for planning and coordinating patient care activities in partnership with MEMC leadership
Coordinates placement of patients based on established criteria and current process
Serves as the first point of contact for providers, ancillary departments, patients, visitors, staff, and outside agencies to coordinate services, resolve issues, and promote service recovery as needed.
Escalates unresolved needs or issues to the correct manager / director / administrator for assistance with resolution.
Makes staffing decisions for nursing departments based on patient care needs and competence of scheduled nursing staff. This includes type and numbers of staff needed in specific departments, moving staff to departments other than their home department, and assigning additional tasks.
Adheres to staffing established staffing guidelines and recommends changes to the guidelines to nursing leadership.
Compliance with Standards of Care and Regulatory Requirements
Maintains standards for professional nursing practice in all care settings
Advocates for compliance with regulatory requirements and performance improvement initiatives
Assists with implementation, and supports compliance with MEMC policies and standards
Participates in creating or revising nursing policies, procedures, or standards as requested
Support of Clinical Leadership Strategies
Collaborates with nursing leaders, Inpatient Care Coordinator and Nurse Educator to support and participate in the following programs :
New employee orientation
Ongoing Competency validation
Utilization Management, Case Management, Care Planning
Required training and educational programs
Contributes information and observations to the appropriate manager or director for performance evaluations
Attends and participates in at least 80% of nursing leadership meetings, and supports decisions and outcomes from those meetings

Steps into direct patient care role as needed to provide for changing patient care needs

Additional Job Description
Education :
Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing with Associate Degree
Bachelor s or Master s degree in Nursing preferred
Commission Corp Officers meet billet description requirements for 0-4 / 03CC063 Nurse Manager or 0-5 / 03CC067 Senior Nurse Manager
Experience :
5 years professional nursing experience preferred; of that minimum 2 years as staff RN in Obstetrics (OB), Emergency medicine (ED), or Critical Care (CCU) specialty preferred
1 year with supervisory responsibilities preferred
License / Certifications :
A valid, current, full and unrestricted Alaska RN license.
Must have American Heart Association (AHA) Heartcode Basic Life Support (BLS). ACLS and PALS at hire
NRP and TNCC preferred
Knowledge :
Knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, diagnosis, and processes (including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide professional nursing care to patients
Knowledge of Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures in order to fully comply with, and advocate compliance with on proper application of these measures
Demonstrated competencies in OB, ED, CCUNursing Standards
Skills :
Knowledge and skills in computer systems including Microsoft Excel, Access, Word
Knowledge and skills as a super user in EHR
Proficient in nursing procedures and basic nursing care
Analytical skills to apply scientific principles in operating and monitoring of basic and specialize medical equipment (ex : defibrillator, gastric and thoracic suction, EKG machines, ect.)
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong, sound decision-making and critical thinking skills
Ability to :
Enter and retrieve patient data accurately.
Verbally communicate findings with healthcare team.
Use assertive patient management techniques to defuse any patient / visitor / peer volatile situations.
