The University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law invites applications for an Assistant Dean for Library and Administrative Services.
The Assistant Dean manages the Law School’s facilities, finances, HR, library, and technology operations / services. This position reports directly to the Law School Dean and manages several administrative staff and all library personnel.
The Assistant Dean has a non-tenure track faculty appointment and takes part in faculty meetings and committee work. The Assistant Dean will have a reduced teaching load, which may be negotiated with the Dean.
This position works closely with other Law School administrative leadership, the University library, other University administrative personnel, and external constituents of the Law School.
RESPONSIBILITIES Facilities
- Manages a Law School furniture inventory and implements its furniture replacement plan.
- Coordinates with University Facilities Management on routine and long-term facilities issues.
- Supervises the submission of Law School facilities work requests made by administrative assistant.
- Collaborates with the Law School Dean on short and long-term facilities strategic planning.
Finances
- Approves Law School invoices entered by administrative assistant.
- Works with Law School Dean on strategic budget planning and implementation of annual budgets.
- Coordinates with University Accounting and Finance departments on finance-related matters.
- Coordinates with the University Foundation on issues related to Law School endowed and current funds.
- Assists administrative assistant with budgeting and operation of student organization funds and activities.
Human Resources
- Coordinates with University Human Resources department on Law School HR matters.
- Assists the Law School Dean with Law School personnel direction and strategic planning.
- Supervises administrative assistant’s entry of employee personal action forms.
- Approves monthly Law School personnel timecards.
- Approves Law School personnel annual leave requests.
- Assists administrative assistant with posting of Law School staff open positions and application management and Faculty Recruitment Committee on faculty openings and application management.
Law Library
- Plans and administers all aspects of the Law Library and its operations, including In consultation with the Law School Dean and Law School Faculty, sets the Law Library’s strategic vision and direction;
- Develops Law Library services and collections consistent with evolving administrative, faculty, and student needs; Ensures the Law Library is and remains in compliance with ABA and AALS library-related standards;
- Recruits, manages, and develops Law Library personnel; Serves on University library and other University committees as appointed / assigned;
- Develops and implements the Law Library budget consistent with the overall current Law School budget and Law School financial strategic plans;
Actively serves in local, regional, and national library organizations; Keeps abreast of emerging library trends as well as emerging trends in legal education, legal practice (such as AI) and informs the administration and faculty, when appropriate or requested, of these trends.
Technology
- Provides strategic leadership for all Law School technology enterprises.
- Ensures the Law School is and remains in compliance with ABA and AALS technology-related standards.
- Manages the Law School’s technology inventory and implements its technology replacement plan.
- Ensures that Law Library personnel and Law Library student employees are prepared as first responders to any classroom technology needs.
- Liaises with University IT to facilitate its handling of Law School daily and long-term IT needs.
Additional Duties
- Assistant Dean will assist the Dean and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs with planning of law school strategy and operations.
- Assistant Dean will typically carry a reduced teaching load negotiated with the Dean.
- Assistant Dean may pursue a research agenda.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A J.D. from an ABA-approved law school.
- A master’s degree or equivalent from an ALA-approved library or information science program.
- At least 5 years of law library experience.
- Managerial experience including supervision of budget, HR, and IT issues.
- Excellent communication, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of and experience with current and emerging legal, information, instructional, and technology (academic and law related) trends.
