JOB PURPOSE
Lab Technician II’s are responsible for completing testing of a moderately broad scope by following documented procedures and standards.
They prepare and instrument equipment for testing and conduct tests in a safe manner in accordance with documented test procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, & OTHER DUTIES
- Perform duties under general supervision. Receives general direction but exercises discretion as to personal work.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of appropriate regulations to assure compliance with government or industry requirements.
- Conduct internal testing of products and equipment :
- New Product Development testing
- Research and Development testing
- Product comparison testing
- Regulatory compliance testing and verification
- Reliability and Life testing
- Creates work instructions for standard lab practices and procedures and trains others in these practices.
- Uses PLCs, Timers, Pneumatics and other equipment for automating test procedures.
- Supports or leads multiple test projects concurrently.
- Coordinates prepping of equipment for third party testing activities.
- Maintain lab test database of all test requests and results.
- Assists in the justification of new laboratory equipment.
- Identifies needed laboratory supplies and works with Lab supervisor to keep lab stocked.
- Demonstrates the proper use of laboratory equipment, assists with training less experienced lab technicians.
- Manages calibration database of lab equipment and coordinates calibration activities.
- Ensures that all equipment used for testing is in calibration.
- Utilizes Data Acquisition (DAQ) in the collection of test data.
- Works closely and effectively with a range of cross-functional associates.
- Clearly communicates the results and underlying risks involved with their efforts.
- Mindful of business impact.
- Provide product information to other resources ( Sales, Marketing, Tech Services, etc.).
- Provide support in meeting customer expectations and requirements.
- Perform other duties or tasks as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical demands Ability to lift and carry 50lbs; Ability to stand for sustained periods of time; Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound;
Occasional physical activity can be expected.
Work Environment The Test Lab area is conditioned to stay between 70-74 F; Life Test area can be anywhere between 50-100 F;
subject to hazards that include electrical current, exposure to high heat, or exposure to chemicals.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No direct reports, though opportunity exists to mentor and pass on knowledge and testing experience to other Technicians and Engineers.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- 3-7 years of relevant testing experience. A 4 year or advanced degree (BS, MS) could be considered to replace 1-2 years of required experience.
- Refrigeration experience beneficial. Familiar with regulatory standards (UL, NSF, etc.)
- Associates degree or two-year diploma in technical field
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & COMPETENCIES
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyze test data and provide recommendations to improve performance.
- Have working knowledge of a variety of test equipment and data acquisition techniques.
- Have working knowledge of electro-mechanical systems and control systems.
- Capable of using accepted formulas and manuals in making necessary computations to determine equipment performance and reliability.
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, DAQ).
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Ability to read and use measuring devices.
- Ability to wear all Personal Protective Equipment ( required, by company policy, for the job being performed.
