Sandy Creek is a 900-megawatt coal-fired power plant located in Riesel, Texas. Consisting of one IHI supercritical pulverized coal boiler, one Toshiba steam turbine generator and Alstom air-quality control systems equipment, it is one of the largest coal plants in the U.
S., able to generate electricity for more than 900,000 Texas homes and businesses. The plant utilizes Powder River Basin
Opportunity Summary
The Control Room Operator (CRO) is responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis. The CRO responds to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions and executes project start-up and shutdown procedures as required.
The CRO ensures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner. Responsible for the safe and efficient operation, testing, inspection, and maintenance of all equipment related to an electrical generation plant.
Primary Duties
- Is knowledgeable and adheres to all safety procedures including lock-out / tag-out and the use of personal protective equipment.
- Operates equipment safely and with the intent to minimize risk to personnel and equipment.
- Operates / maintains plant equipment at maximum operating efficiency.
- Contributes to plant profitability by eliminating wasted materials and supplies and maintaining high productivity.
- Performs necessary maintenance activities.
- Writes and maintains equipment logs, operational logs, and other reports as required in a clear professional manner.
- Is able to read, understand and respond to written instructions and logbook notations.
- Maintains readings, records and reports.
- Participates in daily preventative, scheduled, and corrective maintenance activities in a safe, effective, and timely manner.
- Provides assistance with project clean-up and housekeeping activities as required.
- Understands and follows regulatory requirements.
- Establishes good working relations with teammates, team leaders, plant technical experts, and engineers.
- Operates station vehicles such as forklifts, trucks, overhead cranes, and mobile cranes.
- Reviews instruction manuals and develops troubleshooting procedures for equipment.
- Demonstrates ability to use project drawings, blueprints, and manuals.
- Demonstrates knowledge of equipment layout and plant systems
- Reports upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the Shift Supervisor
- Makes entries in the Operating Log and approves and issues Tag outs as required
- Receives and responds to electrical, steam and fuel dispatcher's orders and requests
- Performs emergency operations to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment
- Provides direction to Assistant Plant Operator (APO) to effect changes in project conditions and chemistry
- Performs other duties as required

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.
Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.
Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
This position offers a 12-hour rotating shift schedule. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and project conditions.
Compensation
The initial starting hourly rate of pay will range from $32.88 to $46.05 per hour.
Job Qualifications
Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.
Associate degree in a technical field desirable.
- Minimum two years' experience as a Control Room Operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant is desired.
- Knowledge of power plant equipment, including motors, pumps, boilers, turbines, generators, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, cooling towers
- Must successfully complete the CRO qualification card.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings, such as P&IDs, single-line diagrams, schematics, and logics.
- Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plant equipment, as well as basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, rigging equipment, and other implements.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Capability to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License at all times.
