Position Description

The Executive Vice Dean, UW School of Medicine and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Washington (EVD / SVPMA) is an integral member of the senior management team of UW Medicine and will provide executive leadership for the UW School of Medicine under the guidance of the CEO / EVPMA / Dean, to whom this position reports.

The EVD / SVPMA has senior executive leadership responsibility for supervising the School of Medicine Vice Deans and convening the department chairs to facilitate the coordination of activities across the School of Medicine’s classroom, research, and clinical learning environments.

The EVD / SVPMA will partner with the President, UW Medicine Hospitals & Clinics and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs (President, UW Medicine Hospitals & Clinics) to support the integration of the School of Medicine and the clinically integrated organizations of UW Medicine.

The EVD / SVPMA will provide senior executive physician leadership that supports the vision, mission, and values of UW Medicine and fosters effective and efficient oversight and coordination of the School of Medicine clinical, research, and education training programs.

The EVD / SVPMA will promote collaboration and professionalism and the identification and resolution of School of Medicine issues at the owned, managed, and affiliated sites of clinical practice, research, and educational activities.

The EVD / SVPMA will serve as the liaison between UW Medicine's clinical programs and its biomedical research activities and education and training programs.

The EVD / SVPMA will also represent the CEO / EVPMA / Dean by working directly with the department chairs in the UW School of Medicine, leaders of interdisciplinary UW Medicine centers and institutes, and the Vice Deans of the School of Medicine.

Faculty Appointment

The EVD & SVPMA position is a full-time position that will have a faculty appointment in one of the UWSOM departments appropriate for background and experience.

This position is not eligble for tenure. This position will also have a small portion of time dedicated to clinical effort.

This is a 12-month service period position (July June) with an anticipated start date in Fall 2024. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide guidance and oversight to the Vice Deans to support strategic planning for the School of Medicine and implementation across the clinical, teaching, training, and research environments.
  • Provide executive leadership in collaboration with the Vice Deans to improve the classroom, research, and clinical learning environments.
  • In coordination with the Vice Deans, ensure that School of Medicine educational programs meet all accreditation requirements.
  • Lead the integration of education, training, and research activities within the clinical environment in collaboration with the executive leadership of UW Medicine.
  • Partner with the President, UW Medicine Hospitals & Clinics and the CMO / VPMA to align and integrate activities within the School of Medicine and UW Medicine Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Collaborate directly with the biomedical research and clinical department chairs to further align department and School of Medicine priorities across the clinical, research, and learning environments.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs and the Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education to promote and foster UW Medicine’s role as a leader in undergraduate medical education (UME), graduate medical education (GME), and health professions education across the WWAMI region.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the Vice Dean for Administration and Finance as to the School of Medicine finances, practice plans, clinical department funding, faculty human resources and staff human resources, and coordination with the UW Office of Academic Personnel.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs for faculty development, leadership training, peer support, and well-being programs.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Education in support of research initiatives and activities within the School of Medicine, across UW, and with external partners and in the coordination with the UW Office of Research.
  • In coordination with the UW Medicine Office of Healthcare Equity and the Vice Dean for EDI, promote and support diversity, equity, and inclusion among faculty, staff, students, and trainees engaged in the clinical, research, and learning environments.
  • Coordinate with the President, UW Physicians for UWP functions and alignment of the practice plan, clinical chairs, and medical staff leadership.
  • Coordinate and partner with the UW Medicine Chief of Staff and the Chief Compliance Officer, UW Medicine and Associate Vice President for Medical Affairs on School of Medicine compliance related activities.
  • Ensure that UW Medicine clinical programs and clinical research are in compliance with state and federal laws, external regulatory agency rules, standards, and policies and in compliance with University and UW Medicine policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Office of the Provost, including the Vice Provosts for Academic Personnel and Research, in support of School of Medicine academic affairs.
  • Collaborate with the UW Senior Vice President for Finance, Planning and Budgeting on the coordination of School of Medicine finance and budgeting activities with UW, in partnership with UW Medicine CFO / VPMA and Vice Dean for Administration and Finance.
  • Coordinate with other units of the University including the central administration as to a range of clinical, research, and education issues involving UW Medicine.
  • Serve on the following committees related to the significant duties described above and chair selected committees as determined by the CEO / EVPMA / Dean : UW Medicine Advisory Board, UW Medicine Compliance Committee, Medical School Executive Committee, Leadership Council for System Integration, Clinical Operations Roundtable, elected Faculty Councils, Biomedical Research Chairs Committee, Clinical Chairs Committee, and UWP Board of Trustees.
  • Has delegated authority for agreements involving clinical, administrative, or other services to be performed by UW School of Medicine faculty physicians or other UW School of Medicine clinical providers.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position will be $260,000 - $700,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.

S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include administrative salary supplement and allowances.

leadership experiences should demonstrate innovation, demonstrated care for faculty, staff and students, and wise use of resources.

Record of Achieving and Fostering Academic Excellence

Exceptional reputation as a physician leader across all aspects of a school of medicine’s missions. Significant accomplishments and credentials as an outstanding medical educator, prolific researcher and / or skilled clinician is expected.

Leadership and participation in one or more national or international academic, scientific, and / or medical societies is preferred.
