Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s () Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineer to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be responsible for the design, fabrication, and support of original instrumentation for the study of nuclei and their decay, in particular high-resolution gamma-ray detectors (GRETINA and GRETA).

A current focus is leading the LBNL effort to support operations of GRETINA and providing expert knowledge towards the GRETA data acquisition testing and array deployment, including operations.

What You Will Do :

  • Acts as a main point of contact and expert to the GRETINA host laboratory for operations.
  • Acts as a main point of contact and technical expert to the LBNL engineering group for GRETINA and GRETA data acquisition electronics.
  • Independently support the continuing development of advanced gamma-ray detector systems for nuclear structure studies, with initial focus on the GRETINA and GRETA gamma ray tracking arrays.
  • Independently solve complex problems using ingenuity, creativity, and advanced scientific principles and the latest software tools.
  • Investigates, creates, and develops new methods and techniques for project advancement.
  • Independently plans and conducts original research related to developing and utilizing novel detectors for nuclear science, and specifically those areas related to a future FRIB science program.
  • May supervise and direct the activities of other personnel.
  • Publish papers, reports, and proposals and make oral presentations of original work.

What is Required :

  • PhD (with 5 years or equivalent experience in a scientific discipline relevant to deploy and manage advanced detectors for nuclear structure research.
  • Demonstrated experience to support the development and operations of advanced gamma-ray detector systems for nuclear structure studies.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and using advanced gamma-ray detectors and associated electronics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital and analog electronics and data processing hardware typically acquired with 3 years’ experience.
  • Proven 3 or more years of experience in testing and characterizing highly segmented coaxial germanium detectors, used in gamma-ray tracking arrays.
  • Demonstrated skills with analysis of data from nuclear physics experiments.
  • Ability to interact professionally with staff within the Division, Laboratory and at other laboratories, including Physicists and Engineers.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Notes :

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is expected to pay $134,316-$167,892, which fits within the full salary range of $134,316-$226,656 for the T10.

4 job code. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
