Job Summary
Performs a variety of routine tasks to assist in expediting patient food services. Serves patient meal trays, loads / unloads trays onto food trucks, works in dish room, and sets up, prepares, and assembles nourishments and other food items.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities :
Assembles food items and delivers trays
- Refers to daily assignment sheet for the day's duty schedule. Assembles cold food items for patient tray line following production sheets and verbal instructions.
- Cleans and sanitizes work area upon completion of assembly process.
- Transports assembled cold food items to serving area. Sets up cold and hot serving stations with proper serving utensils, condiments, china and silverware.
- Inspects flatware, china, and trays for cleanliness, chips or stains, removing any that are not suitable for use.
- Working from color coded menus assembles patient trays; rotating work station on tray line, start station, cold station, hot stations;
loading trays. Assesses food quality and food temperatures throughout the serving and tray assembly process.
Throughout the day, assembles and delivers patient trays as to specifics and food items to patient rooms and nursing units.
Performs food handling and clean up duties
- Upon conclusion of the tray assembly process, covers food and refrigerates leftovers.
- Follows proper procedure to clean and sanitize equipment and work area.
- As food carts are returned to kitchen, removes all trays and trash, and sorts and processes items for the dishwasher including recycling where appropriate.
- Puts away cleaned items and cleans and sanitizes food trucks. Cleans and organizes reach-in coolers, walk-in coolers, storage areas, work tables, shelves and drawers.
Performs other duties as assigned
- Operates dishwasher as needed or assigned.
- Prepares and delivers daily mid-morning and mid-afternoon nourishments.
- Fills bulk daily nourishment request for patient units.
- Willingly and enthusiastically performs other duties as assigned.

- Completes assigned tasks correctly and within time frame.
- Follows safety and sanitation rules at all times.
- Is on duty and ready to work on time.
- Agrees to work when asked during staffing shortage.
- Follows the standards for acceptable attendance.
- Takes breaks only when own work and team’s work is complete.
Demonstrates initiative
- Initiates tasks without being told (knows and follows routine without reminders).
- Identifies potential problems and solves them effectively.
- Recognizes when someone needs help and assists without being asked.
- Recommends improvements to own job and department’s work in general.
Qualifications
Educational / Minimum Requirements :
Some High School. High school diploma or GED preferred.
State / Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements :
None
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements :
General orientation at time of hire. Fire / Safety / Infection Control annually.
Special Requirements :
None
Physical Requirements :
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. up to waist level; 10 to 15 lbs. to chest level. Free range of body motion so that tasks which require walking, bending, stooping, twisting and reaching can be completed, prolonged standing for periods of two or more hours at a time.
Visual acuity corrected to normal. Ability to communicate with co-workers.
Work Environment :
Indoors, temperatures 0 degrees F to 100 degrees F, noisy kitchen environment, wet floors, working with cleaning chemicals and sanitizers.
Cognitive Requirements :
Ability to understand, interpret, and execute written and verbal instructions in English. Basic math skills.
