Job Title : Registered Nurse

Department : Emergency Room

Reports to : Assistant CNO

Status : Full-Time / 0.9 FTE HNA

Primary Purpose : Directs specific nursing care for patients suffering from trauma or illness that requires emergency attention and as directed by medical staff and pursuant to objectives and policies of the hospital.

Must recognize and effectively treat life-threatening conditions, with the ability to deploy rapid assessment and treatment of patients in highly critical situations, particularly during the initial phase of acute illness and trauma, where every second is important.

The emergency room nurse must possess knowledge about healthcare on general and specific levels to provide quality care to patients of all ages.

Additionally, the emergency room nurse must be prepared to treat a wide variety of illnesses and injuries, ranging from a fever to a heart attack.

1. Completes appropriate and thorough patient evaluations and treatment plans consistently. Assists the emergency room doctor to treat patient immediately, and in a timely fashion.

  • Uses critical thinking to act quickly to assess and treat patients.
  • Recognizes potential for complications or risk factors and initiates action to correct or reduce risks.
  • Prioritizes accurate assessments of patient's immediate condition or needs.

2. Accompanies emergency room physician on patient assessments to answer questions, receive instructions and note patient care requirements.

Functions as a team player and practices effectively with all areas of the hospital and its' providers.

  • Communicates precise patient assessments to the emergency room physicians.
  • Collaborates with emergency room physicians and other health care members such as lab, radiology, EMS, medical examiner, etc.

3. Gives direct patient care, evaluates all care given and patients' reactions, both emotionally and physically. Communicates appropriately with patient's family.

  • Provides care and makes accurate assessments in high-stress and possibly life-threatening situations.
  • Demonstrates adequate knowledge and competency in emergent situations (i.e.IV's, medications, resuscitations)
  • c) Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate emergent care to any age-related needs of the patients served.
  • d) Possess the emotional stability to cope with death and unusual occurrences and conditions. Remains calm and sympathetic as they perform their duties.
  • e) Anticipates patient needs and ensures that pain is controlled.

4. Identifies and researches emergency room service problems and assists in solutions.

  • Reports incidences and unusual occurrences such as violence, theft, med errors, etc.
  • Takes ownership and responsibility for addressing problems. (i.e., gets involved).
  • Addresses concerns with supervisor and / or co-workers professionally and privately.

5. Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Reports safety problems and makes recommendations.

6. Assists in orientation of new personnel to the emergency room.

7. Attends and contributes to monthly staff meetings and in-service educational programs.

  • Attends 80% of mandatory hospital in-services programs.
  • Attends 50% of nurse's monthly meetings.

8. Maintains skills and knowledge through participation in educational programs, seminars & workshops and reading professional journals.

Maintains current certifications, BLS, ACLS, PALS, RN License.

9. Respects patients and families and involves them in clinical decision-making.

  • Acknowledges a patient's presence immediately by making eye contact, smiling and using their names whenever possible. (AIDET)
  • Demonstrates age-appropriate skills when communicating with patients and families.
  • Satisfactory implements patient education / discharge plan.

10. Complies with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures, safety program requirements, corporate compliance program standards of conduct, all applicable statutes, rules and regulations of Kahuku Medical Center.

11. Uses "down time" efficiently and productively.

12. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor and emergency room physicians

Qualifications :

  • Current unencumbered State of Hawaii registered nurse license is required.
  • Current specialty certification required.
  • Two years of hospital experience preferred.

Physical, Communication, Mental and Environmental Demands :

  • Long periods of standing and walking.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, reaching, and sitting.
  • Continuous use of vision (corrected vision, depth perception, wide field of vision and color vision).
  • Pushing and pulling up to 300 lbs.
  • Lifting with assistance up to 150 lbs.
  • Carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to converse, read, write understand and instruct in English.
  • Continuous attention to detail, concentration, and alertness, with frequent mathematical ability.
  • Exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
