Position Summary
The Medical Technologist Intern (MT Intern), under the direction and guidance of experienced Medical Laboratory Technologists, is educated to observe and perform moderate to high complexity testing on patient and quality control samples using quality standards, FDA requirements, and CLIA regulatory standards.
Such testing may be performed by manual methods involving technical interpretation and by automated analyzers involving maintenance and troubleshooting.
The MT Interns are taught to be individually responsible and professionally accountable for the testing process and to understand the role medical technology plays in aiding in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
The MT Intern may complete testing on various analyzers in the laboratory and / or by manual methods on various specimen sources such as blood, urine, and other body fluids, etc.
using established testing and safety procedures, under close supervision.
Duties & Responsibilities
- 80% Observes the performance of highly and moderately complex testing by various methods on various specimen sources such as blood, urine, and other body fluids, using established procedures, under close supervision.
- Completes assigned training and thoroughly reads and understands all educational materials, ( orientation binder, training guides, safety manual, etc.).
- Reviews test results before reporting, using technical and scientific knowledge to recognize and verify result validity and clinical relevance.
- Follows laboratory and institutional established procedures and policies .
- Performs established quality assurance procedures (quality control testing, instrument function checks, and calibrations) maintains appropriate documentation and reports irregularities to leadership.
- Trains and overserves the operation, troubleshooting, and resolution of technical problems and documents corrective action wherever possible.
- Observes appropriate response to error flags for critical results, delta checks, required dilutions, and result patterns.
Notifies physician(s) of life threatening results.
- Trains to assess accuracy and validity of obtained test results by applying knowledge of relevant scientific principles, recognizes changes that are critical to patient care, identifies probable causes for irregular and atypical findings.
- Receives a wide variety of patient specimens for testing. Performs the procedures needed to prepare specimens for testing or referral to other laboratories.
- Observes and participates on CAP proficiency testing. Completes QA reports and participates in CE as needed for the MT Intern program.
- Use the laboratory information system for all records, functions and inquiries related to testing of patient specimens.
- 20% Cognizant of the CAP Checklist requirement for all sections and knowledgeable of the location and contents of all binders in the sections (virtual and / or physical).
- Maintain a neat, orderly and safe working environment in the laboratory while adhering to all guidelines of OHSA's Bloodborne Pathogens Control Act.
- Maintain a harmonious working relationship among laboratory staff, provide the staff with leadership, serve as a mentor and role model and practice continuous quality improvement in all areas.
- Interact with physicians, patients, staff, visitors and all customers via telephone conversations and in person in a pleasant and helpful manner.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section

Must have a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in Science, that meets the CLIA requirements to perform high complexity testing.
