Senior Design Technician
Job Summary
As a Senior Design Technician, you will be an unlicensed design professional responsible for planning and developing design and documentation from the schematic through construction phases.
You will take individual responsibility for producing design and documentation, regularly directing junior staff in assigned areas of responsibility.
Essential Functions
Senior Architect Equivalent (Over 10 Years’ Experience, Unlicensed)
- Experience : Professional degree in Architecture with a minimum of 10 years of related experience.
- Client Interaction : Capable of presenting directly to clients on technical and design solutions.
- Project Execution : Works closely with the Project Manager to execute project plans, coordinating and supervising the team's design and technical delivery.
Communication and Collaboration
- Applies comprehensive knowledge of architectural principles and practices across a broad array of assignments.
- Operates independently regarding architectural methods and complexities.
- Maintains frequent communication with the project team to ensure proper information flow and to keep the team informed of any client activities impacting the project.
- Leads meetings to ensure deliverables and deadlines are met.
- Attends meetings with clients and project teams as necessary, demonstrating skill in coordinating with consultants and internal teams.
- Responsible for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments on designated projects or project phases.
- May supervise a small staff of architects and technicians.
- Prepares meeting notes, digitally files materials, and promotes these practices within the project team.
- Proficient in self-checking work and coordinating with the client project team and consultants.
- Formulates work plans and scheduling strategies with the client team, adhering to established project schedules.
- Prepares and delivers presentations to clients, both in person and virtually, taking leadership in these presentations.
- Demonstrates time management skills required to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Project Involvement
- Develops planning and creative design concepts for projects, preparing presentation and design drawings and details.
- Experienced in developing details and providing planning and design support for design documentation.
- Creates and develops building design drawings and compiles information to create project documentation.
- Manages document preparation timing and schedules with staffing levels, ensuring document completion and adherence to project schedules and deadlines as directed by the Project Manager.
- Serves as Document Team Leader on selected projects.
- Obtains and assembles data to complete drawings, including field verifying measurements as necessary.
- Coordinates structural, electrical, and mechanical drawings and specifications with architectural drawings and specifications.
Meets with engineers as necessary and articulates the integration of the architecture and the engineering with the full A / E team, including the specifications group.
- Provides technical knowledge through schematic, design development, and construction documentation to promote the delivery of accurate, detailed, and coordinated project documentation.
- Researches materials and incorporates accurate information into drawings and the project cut book, coordinating with the specifications group.
- Provides the team with insight on possible material and design choices that may be beneficial in design or cost to the overall project.
- Assists as necessary in specification preparation, including review of specifications at the completion of each project phase.
- Assists in Quality Control reviews throughout the office.
- Understands how to use local and state building and fire codes and prepares Code Survey and Code Drawings for the project.
Notifies team members of possible conflicts between design and code.
- Understands how to navigate through local zoning and approvals processes and assists the Project Manager in all necessary work for adherence.
- Demonstrates experience in performing construction administration tasks, including shop drawing review, RFIs, and document modifications.
Other
- Participates in the preparation of proposal / interview materials to secure new business opportunities.
- Supports new business development opportunities by providing expert technical knowledge.
- Assumes special projects and duties as assigned or requested.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Professional BArch or master’s in architecture.
- 10+ years’ experience in architectural practice or related position.
- 8+ years creating design solutions.
Training Requirements (Licenses, Programs, or Certificates)
- Advanced Computer and Information Management Skills.
- Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD (current versions), and MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, MS Project).
- 3D Rendering capability.
