JOB SUMMARY : The Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) fulfills a critical role by conducting assessments, consultations, and targeted, behaviorally based interventions with patients and families at Spectra Health.
The BHC is a licensed behavioral health professional who demonstrates compassion, trust, and respect within an integrated health care team.
With most patients preferring to receive their mental health treatment in a primary care setting, the BHC is essential in creating a patient-centered environment.
This role partners with professionals in primary care, dental, social services, and addiction treatment. The BHC ensures that psychological and behavioral concerns are addressed.
The BHC reports to the Integrated Care Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
- Provide brief consultation services to patients and providers using the Primary Care Behavioral Health Model.
- Assist clients in successfully identifying and achieving goals related to their mental health and lifestyle factors that affect health, such as tobacco use, substance use, nutrition, and physical activity.
- Evaluate crisis situations and apply appropriate interventions.
- Assist the primary care team in developing processes, behavioral interventions, and patient education to improve self-management of chronic disease.
- Facilitate referrals to specialty mental health or addiction counseling providers as needed.
- Exhibit an understanding of cultural humility during interactions with staff and clients by providing an inclusive and safe environment.
- Assist with tracking behavioral health patient registries and participating in case review with consulting psychiatrist.
- Prepare and maintain all required documentation through a shared electronic health record.
- Ability to work in both the Larimore and Grand Forks locations.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS : Required :
Required :
- Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or related behavioral health sciences
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure.
Supervision toward the LPCC license can be provided.
Qualified candidates will have a working knowledge of motivational interviewing and other evidence-based interventions.
Comfort working within the pace of a primary care setting and within an interdisciplinary team.
- A belief in the principles of trauma informed care and harm reduction.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred :
- Experience in a Primary Care Behavioral Health Model.
- Prior experience working with diverse population groups.
- Experience and / or knowledge of evidence-based treatment and intervention for people experiencing substance use disorders.
WORKING CONDITIONS : Work is performed in a clinical setting and requires some hands-on patient care. OSHA category : High risk.
Job requires performance of tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : The Behavioral Health Consultant is primarily a desk job that requires the ability to sit for long periods of time (up to 8 hours) at a desk or workstation.
Periodically, the position requires lifting or carrying items that would be appropriate in an office environment, not more than 20lbs.
