We’re currently searching for a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to join our Psychiatry team at Cook Counseling Center in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission.
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS ROLE :
1) You’ll be joining the Psychiatry team at Cook Counseling Center, a multidisciplinary team who assesses, diagnoses, and treats students referred for psychiatric evaluation.
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is supervised by Board Certified Psychiatrists.
2) You’ll be reporting to the Associate Director for Psychiatry in a Regular eleven month, 100% administrative professional appointment.
3) You’ll be responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating students referred for psychiatric evaluation.
4) You’ll have the chance to grow and take advantage of a developmental plan with opportunities to advance within the Department and the Division.

Required Qualifications
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree with a specialization in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing or Family Nurse Practitioner.
- Current unrestricted Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license with Psychiatric Mental Health certification (PMHNP-BC) or Family Nurse Practitioner (by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or American Nurses Credentialing Center) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Must possess prescriptive authority in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Strong Knowledge of psychiatric illness and differential diagnosis with working knowledge of the DSM-5 TR. Ability to assess, analyze, diagnose, treat / prescribe with outcome criteria and re-evaluation.
- Strong assessment, diagnostic, and therapeutic skills within evidence-based practice. Documented knowledge of nursing techniques and psychotropic medication indications, contraindications, administration, side effects, and adverse effects.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Commitment to providing patient-centered care with empathy, integrity, and cultural competency.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team with acceptance, respect, and trust.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records, electronic prescribing, and relevant technology systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience or interest in working with students from under-represented populations.
- Previous training and / or experience in a college mental health setting.
- Experience with managing crisis situations, completing risk assessments, and disposition planning to address safety risks.
- Demonstrated expertise in a minimum of one specific treatment relevant to collegiate mental health (e.g. eating disorders, ADHD).
- A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice.
- The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy relationships.
