MLTC was created by nine First Nations located in north-west Saskatchewan who have constitutionally recognized aboriginal rights and Treaty Rights under Treaties #6, #8 and #10.

The primary purpose of MLTC is to serve those First Nations in their aspirations for cultural, economic and political autonomy.

As a private sector employer engaged primarily in promoting and serving the interests of the member First Nations, MLTC asserts its right to provide preferential treatment to First Nations people, giving them priority in decisions on employment matters such as hiring, and this can extend to measures such as opening competitions only to First Nations people.

  • This competition is open to all applicants; and
  • Preference will be given to First Nation or other Indigenous applicants who possess the qualifications, knowledge and skills to meet the minimum suitability requirements as stated for the position

The Meadow Lake Tribal Council is seeking compassionate, energetic, motivated individuals to replenish our casual Counsellor pool located at the Mistahey Musqua Treatment Centre.

Under the direction of the MMTC Manager, the Counselor assesses client needs and supports required, i.e., crisis and distress counseling;

client case management; and develop / implement client programs. You must be able to work a 12-hour shift during the day, night, and / or weekends.

The philosophy of the Mistahey Musqua Treatment Centre is to promote a healthy addiction free lifestyle and to enhance the well-being of our First Nation communities through providing holistic (physical, emotional, mental & spiritual) counselling services in the area of prevention, treatment and aftercare.

Duties :

  • Provide one on one counselling to clients; document all counselling sessions.
  • Ensure proper care of clients; develop safe plans, follow-up, and after care plans.
  • Record and file appropriate information into client files.
  • Facilitate group lectures and discussions.
  • Ensure the clients safety, and security of the building.
  • Ensure all the Treatment Centre guidelines and regulations are adhered to.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the MMTC Senior Administrator.

Qualifications : Minimum :

Minimum :

  • Basic knowledge of case-work / counselling.
  • Demonstrated experience in treatment center counseling programs.
  • Willingness to obtain certification as an Addictions Counsellor from one of the recognized Canadian Certification bodies.

Preferred :

  • 1 3 years’ experience in an Indigenous addiction treatment setting.
  • Certificate, Diploma or Degree in the social or behavioral sciences (human services, counseling, psychology, social work, or relevant field).

Other :

  • Knowledge of and willingness to actively support traditional healing practices;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the links between alcohol / addictions treatment and health issues at the First Nation community level.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions, and values with the ability to speak Cree or Dene would be a considerable asset.
  • Must lead a life of sobriety and one free of addictions.
  • Must have CPR & First Aid Training; must possess a valid driver’s license.
