The Physician Assistant, Inpatient provides advanced health care to individuals, families or groups as an advanced or expert clinician.

This includes the assessment of individual health, analyzing data to determine medical and nursing care needed, planning a treatment strategy to meet identified needs, and evaluating responses to nursing and medical interventions all while under the guidance of and collaboration with a physician.

GENERAL DUTIES

Prescribes, delegates and coordinates care to the patient through the process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation.

Conducts and documents age appropriate assessments of patients, including history taking, physical examination in an on-going systematic manner.

Orders, performs, or interprets the results of diagnostic tests and appropriate labs and screening procedures based on assessment results, differential diagnoses, and knowledge about age, gender and health status of clients.

Collaborates with assigned collaborating and / or supervising physician(s) for appropriateness of treatment especially for patients with complex medical conditions, escalates to physician as appropriate and as deemed necessary.

Performs approved procedures on critically ill patients. Participates with physicians and other clinicians to assure effective patient care consistent with quality indicators.

Conducts rounds with physicians on patients in assigned areas, consults in intensive care units and other areas, and assists with transferring patient to a lower level of care when appropriate.

Establishes and maintains communication with other health care providers and departments to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness and to promote consistency and continuity of care.

Completes patient care audits with collaborating physician to ensure documentation, treatment planning, referrals, and appropriate escalation to physician.

Stays current of the latest developments, advancements and trends in specialty. Participates in didactic conferences, journal clubs related to critical care-related issues.

Attends continuing education programs to maintain licensure and to keep abreast of current practice within specialty, including specialty certification.

Participates in policy and program development.

May collaborates in research activities, when appropriate, with other healthcare professionals to achieve improvement of patient care and organizational outcomes.

Serves a preceptor to APP students as appropriate.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited college or university and current Louisiana license as a Physician Assistant.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

American Heart Association, Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (BLS-HCP) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

  • Light : Light physical requirements- Light Work - Exerting up to pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to pounds of force frequently, and / or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly : activity or condition exists 2 / 3 or more of the time) to move objects.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work : (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree;

or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and / or pulling of arm or leg controls; and / or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and / or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.

NOTE : The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
