Position Focus :
The Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute (NHTI) seeks to hire a director to lead the organization with a vision that encompasses continuing excellent programs and building a collaborative vision for ongoing and future work.
The NHTI is an educational partnership between Yale University and the New Haven Public Schools designed to strengthen teaching and learning in local schools and, by example and direct assistance, in schools around the country.
The director’s priority will be to strengthen partnerships with New Haven public schools and the other Yale-affiliated groups that engage in local schools.
The director is also responsible for leading the Yale National Initiative, a network of university-school district partnerships with aligned goals and activities.
Other key responsibilities include updating the NHTI’s communications strategy and digital presence (web resources, social media, The director works with colleagues at the University appointed to a University Advisory Council and its Executive Committee, in addition to a National University Advisory Council and its National Steering Committee.
The incoming director will be deeply committed to Yale-New Haven partnerships that align with strategic goals for engagement with the local community.
Primary responsibilities include ensure that the NHTI continues to provide high quality professional development for public school teachers.
Provide strategic leadership for the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute (NHTI) and the Yale National Initiative by defining a vision for the future.
Maintain and strengthen connections between the institute and local public schools. Maintain and expand Yale faculty engagement in the NHTI.
Collaborate with other Yale-affiliated groups to ensure that opportunities for local teachers are clearly presented and widely accessible.

Essential Duties
1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University.
3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University.
5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures.
7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature.
8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives.
9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems.
10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area.
11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies.
13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Seven years of demonstrated experience or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.
Required Skill / Ability 1 :
Demonstrated experience with either public school teacher professional development or working with college and university faculty.
Required Skill / Ability 2 :
Demonstrated record of providing leadership to a complex program.
Required Skill / Ability 3 :
Familiarity with current topics and approaches to teacher professional development.
Required Skill / Ability 4 :
Familiarity with program evaluation and the ability to manage a budget.
Required Skill / Ability 5 :
Ability to manage a variety of working relationships (management, collaboration, influence) with sensitivity to cultural and political factors.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Demonstrated experience with both public school teacher professional development and college and university faculty. Proven experience with town-gown partnerships between an institution of higher education and the local community.
