Summary Description

The Campus Safety Officer helps maintain a safe and secure campus learning environment for all by protecting lives, property, and reputation of Colorado College and the greater community, including guests and visitors.

Campus Safety functions twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, therefore, a Campus Safety Officer can be assigned to work weekends, holidays, overnight shifts or critical incidents.

A Campus Safety Officer supports the day-to-day communication operations, patrol and community service and emergency response efforts throughout campus.

This position brings awareness and communicates resources to adhere to the college’s policies. A Campus Safety Officer is expected to have high visibility and engagement within the campus community.

Work location On-site : This position operates on campus Pay Band 3 Anticipated Salary Range $18.00 to $20.77 per hour (plus additional shift differential of $0.

50 per hour) Pay Information The pay range reflects base pay for positions in a given pay band across the college. Individual rates are determined within the range by factors including one’s qualifications, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same band and department budget.

Serve as initial point of contact via telephone, email, in person and radio; utilize customer service skills to gather pertinent information quickly and efficiently;

summarize, prioritize, and distribute that information to units in the field.

Monitor the status of officers and student staff in the field and provide them with information; maintain up-to-date knowledge of various information databases as well as the department operations manual, student code of conduct, and college policies;

assist with follow-up to include notification of campus administration, emergency services, or on-campus service providers to initiate additional support or repairs.

  • Create, maintain, and document accurate records of calls for service from intake to response, resolution, and follow-up using a records management software, paper, and other electronic databases as applicable.
  • Monitor multiple security systems, such as closed-circuit cameras, card access, mass emergency notification systems, emergency communication channels to include call boxes and elevator telephones, and fire / burglar alarm systems;

generate calls for service, dispatch appropriate services to respond based on reports or observations.

  • Serve as a liaison for notification to other campus support resources and departments.
  • Organize and maintain keys, access cards, building locking and unlocking requests, daily activity logs, radios, other equipment, and office supplies.

Patrol and Community Service :

  • Patrol buildings, parking lots and grounds to prevent theft, trespass, vandalism and other offenses; watch for and investigate unusual or suspicious activities, circumstances or behaviors and inappropriate use of college facilities or property;
  • lock and unlock doors, monitor for safety concerns and hazards (i.e. fire, toxic spills, water leaks, heating / hot water equipment problems) and ensure proper functioning of building alarm systems and security lights;

take appropriate action in accordance with federal, state, municipal regulations and college policy.

Engage, provide, and exchange information with students, employees, and guests; establish rapport with members of the college community and surrounding areas;

participate in community relations activities.

  • Maintain a positive and courteous demeanor, practice open dialogue, and communicate with others in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Enforce all written and posted college parking and traffic regulations to include municipal street permitted areas / zones.
  • Complete sector check logs, prepare written reports and other forms or documentation as required.
  • Provide safe transportation to students and employees on and around the campus.

Emergency Response :

  • Respond to fire alarm activation and assist emergency personnel on scene, triage initial problem and contact facilities services to initiate repairs.
  • Render first-aid in event of minor injuries; make sound decisions regarding transport to Student Health Center, hospital, or requesting an ambulance to the scene.
  • May respond to and assist with traffic accidents on or in close proximity to campus until the arrival of proper authorities.
  • Serve as initial point of contact in emergency situations; utilize verbal de-escalation practices, and customer service skills to quickly and efficiently gather pertinent incident information from reporting parties and summarize, prioritize, and distribute that information to units in the field;

initiate all applicable emergency protocols at the direction of the acting incident commander. Complete, prepare written reports, and other forms or documentation as required.

  • Provide services for special events including security / event management, emergency management, and physical security.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the college’s Emergency Management Plan and the roles of campus safety and / or campus safety officers within that plan.

Establishing command and managing critical incidents as well as the effects of an incident on the college.

  • Does this position require driving CC vehicles / being insurable under CC's insurance plan? Yes Required Qualifications : High school graduate plus a minimum of three years of related experience or equivalent education;
  • must be 21 and possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is insurable by Colorado College’s motor vehicle insurance carrier;
  • excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent customer service skills; ability to exercise good judgment and handle confidential / sensitive information with discretion;
  • ability to think critically and problem solve; ability to engage and develop working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds;
  • proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; ability to operate computer equipment and a 2-way radio. Physical requirements include ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions;
  • walking, prolonged standing, climbing of stairs; ability to lift / carry up to 20 lbs. Preferred Qualifications : Associate degree or certifications in a related field to include NIMS ICS certification;

experience in higher education setting, campus safety, security, hospitality services, and / or emergency responses services.
