Key Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse is to provide direct nursing care to the residents and to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants as assigned.

Supervision must be in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our Community;

as well as what may be required by the RCC or Unit Manager to ensure that the highest level of quality care is maintained at all times.

The following is a general list of key job duties and responsibilities in your position. The list is not to be considered inclusive and you will be required to perform other duties / responsibilities as assigned by an authorized supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities

Direct the day-to-day functions of the nursing assistants in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care Community.

Ensure that all nursing personnel assigned to you comply with the written policies and procedures established by this Community.

Meet with your assigned nursing staff, as well as support personnel, in planning the shifts' services, programs, and activities.

Make written and oral reports / recommendations concerning the activities of your shift as required.

Cooperate with other resident services when coordinating nursing services to ensure that the resident's total regimen of care is maintained.

Ensure that all nursing service personnel are in compliance with their respective job descriptions.

Participate in Community surveys and inspections made by authorized government agencies as requested.

Periodically review the resident's written discharge plan. Participate in the updating of the resident's written discharge plan as required.

Interpret the department's policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies as required.

Administer professional services such as; catheterization, tube feedings, suction, applying and changing dressings / bandages, packs, colostomy, and drainage bags, taking blood, giving massages and range of motion exercises, care for the dead / dying, etc., as required.

Perform lab tests, blood pressures, and other routine monitored as required per the resident care plan.

Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.

Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.

Encourage attending physicians to review treatment plans, record and sign their orders, progress notes, etc., in accordance with established policies.

Receive telephone orders from physicians and transcribe on the Physicians' Order Form.

Chart nursing notes in an informative and descriptive manner that reflects the care provided to the resident, as well as the resident's response to the care.

Complete accident / incident reports per Community policy. Submit to RCC or Unit Manager.

Record new / changed diet orders. Forward information to the Dietary Department.

Perform routine charting duties as required and in accordance with established charting and documentation policies and procedures.

Inform the Nurse Supervisor of staffing needs when assigned personnel fail to report to work.

Report absentee call-ins and no call, no shows to RCC and / or Scheduling Coordinator.

Review and evaluate your department's work force and make recommendations to the Nurse Supervisor.

Develop work assignments and / or assist in completing and performing such assignments.

Make rounds of your unit / shift to ensure staff is performing their work assignments as expected.

Develop and maintain a good working rapport with co-workers and other departments within the Community.

Review complaints and grievances. Report these to the RCC and / or Unit Manager.

Nurse report must be given and received when coming on and off each shift.

Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals in accordance with the Community's policies and procedures governing accidents and incidents.

Monitor your assigned personnel to ensure that they are following established safety regulations in the use of equipment and supplies.

Recommend to the Nurse Supervisor the equipment and supply needs of your unit / shift.

Review care plans daily to ensure that appropriate care is being rendered.

Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.

Essential Job Duties / Physical Requirements

  • Regular worksite attendance.
  • Must have a valid professional license (RN) that is in good standing with the State.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must be able to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
  • Must be able to perform the essential position functions of the job with, or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Employee is required to use a transfer / gait belt or to obtain the assistance of another employee when attempting to assist residents when lifting or carrying objects in excess of 25 pounds.

The employee must be aware that during the normal, routine performance of the essential functions, some of the following body movements may occur naturally, although hey may not be a requirement of the job.

  • Twisting, Bending, Crawling, Squatting, Kneeling, Crouching, Climbing and Balancing is required.
  • Employees may be required to operate and automobile and various games.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and hostile people within the Community.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
