Job Description Summary

Leads a team of managers and / or underwriters in an assigned territory and will be responsible for contributing to the development of business strategy (in conjunction with senior leaders), execution of the business plan and attainment of goals and financial metrics as outlined in the business plan.

Responsible for influencing and managing relationships with brokers, program managers, and other producer channels, including exploring opportunities to drive more business.

Monitors trends and manages product issues within the territory or region for all assigned products.

Reporting Relationships : Reports to VP of MLS. 3 - 5 direct reports, may have indirect reports.

Core Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Serves as Regional Leader and has a direct focus on sales and accelerated growth in assigned territory.
  • In conjunction with leader develops, maintains, and effectively executes underwriting guidelines and product management and best practices to ensure the integrity, consistency, and effectiveness of the portfolio across all channels.

Leads the exploration and delivery of innovative product solutions.

Ensures the achievement of continued profitability, growth and / or operational efficiency for the assigned line of business or territory through development of risk appetite, assessment of risk exposures and controls, market dynamics, emerging risk issues, and product innovation.

Evaluates underwriting and product performance based on financial analysis. Includes rate, reserve adequacy, claims, operational, planning and product reviews.

Provides results and recommendations to key stakeholders and action plans to adjust results.

Leads, directs and has full management accountability for staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent development and succession planning in accordance with strategic direction.

Collaborates with key business partners in Lines of Business, Segments, Underwriting Services, Loss Control, Pricing, Claims, Distribution, and Compliance to address governance, processing, and compliance issues.

Developing Strategy : in conjunction with leader; develops and executes on business plan.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Skills and Experiences :

Education : Bachelor's degree in a related discipline, or equivalent.

License / Certification / Designation : Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation preferred.

Experience : Minimum six to eight years of experience in the Management / Professional Liability marketplace. Demonstrated ability to achieve successful financial benchmarks.

Strong relationships and recognized expertise in the Management / Professional Liability marketplace. Strong preference for demonstrated managerial experience.

Deep knowledge and expertise in Excess line of business. Advanced communication, relationship management and team building skills.

Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving significant problems within scope of responsibility.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and HR Business Partner.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate;

the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment.

The national salary range for AVP, Mgmt Liability - E&S / Specialty : $150,000.00-$293,000.00

The expected starting salary range for AVP, Mgmt Liability - E&S / Specialty : $157,000.00 - $262,000.00
