Construction Inspector II - Major Constructions

Some of what you'll be doing :

As a Construction Inspector II, you will perform inspection work for projects to ensure compliance with codes, regulations, contract requirements on construction projects.

You will evaluate, assess, and resolve issues at the field level. You will also coordinate construction activities with project stakeholders.

  • You will coordinate and / or conduct on site testing and special inspections, verify field measurements / quantities for contract payments, monitor Temporary Erosion and Sediment Control (TESC), and ensure that a quality assurance / control program is developed and enforced.
  • You will coordinate material deliveries and delivery logistics.
  • You will participate in managing and inspecting project punch list process.
  • You will coordinate complex Utility Shutdown Requests for projects, resolve potential impacts with customers, tenants and Port departments.
  • You will prepare and maintain documentation for multiple projects, including inspection logs, daily reports, force accounts, materials testing, photos, and other construction records for assigned construction projects.
  • You will update design plans / drawings based on changes that occur during construction to ensure drawings are an accurate representation of work performed.
  • You will document contractor work that is out of compliance or deficient and initiate Non Conformance Report (NCR) process.
  • You will participate in planning, preconstruction, coordination, progress, scheduling, and field staff meetings. You will also participate in the development of Construction Management policies and procedures.
  • You will coordinate and communicate complex construction activities between contractors, tenants, stakeholders, other Port departments, and the general public.

You will also coordinate moderately complex shutdown / outages and impactful construction activities with customers, tenants, and other Port departments.

Who you are :

  • Experienced You have four (4) years of experience in construction, general or special inspection, or other construction field work.
  • Desired We hope you have an Associate's degree or vocational program in Pre-Engineering, Construction Management or Building Inspection.

Expertise You have proven technical knowledge of a variety of construction operations, methods, materials, costs, and equipment.

You have advanced knowledge of multiple construction disciplines or specialist in a specific discipline. You have proven knowledge of engineering and architectural design principles, practices and procedures, building codes, and specifications.

You understand construction drawings, specifications, project schedules submittals, Request for Information (RFI), non-compliance, change orders, constructability reviews, and contracts.

You have knowledge of general office and construction site practices and procedures.

Efficient Communicator You have well-developed verbal and written communication and active listening skills. You can write concise, organized, and clear communications with attention to detail and high level of accuracy.

You have the ability to organize, maintain, and update project documentation and records. You can also effectively interact, coordinate, and communicate construction activities with a variety and diverse groups of clients, customers, contractors, tenants, general public, and employees in a professional manner.

You have the ability to interpret complex contract documents and identify non compliance with the provisions of the contract.

Adaptable You have adaptable style and approach in response to changing environments, and different perspectives, needs, or demands.

You can work effectively in situations involving uncertainty or lack of information and response flexibly to change.

Strategic Decision-maker You have the ability to engage judgment and experience to define, analyze, and resolve problems.

You have the ability to recognize potential problems and resolve them in a timely manner or escalate to supervisor / manager for resolution.

You also have the ability to exercise sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines.

  • Proactive You have the ability to train staff in work procedures and techniques and to lead others and effectively influence people without direct authority.
  • Technically Skilled You have knowledge of and proficiency with a variety of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;

with the ability to adapt to changing programs and software.

What else you need to know :

  • Driver’s License You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally to project sites.
  • Work Schedule Your normal work schedule will be Monday Friday, 7 : 00 : 00 (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.

You may be required to work any and all assigned shifts, including weekends, nights and holidays. You may be required to work during emergencies.

  • Work Environment You will generally work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, work at heights and / or in confined spaces, work on docks and adjacent to water.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle.

If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.

  • Overtime Eligible You are eligible for overtime pay in this role.
  • Safety Requirements You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Security Requirements As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
