ABOUT THE ROLE

Childhaven is seeking a dynamic Youth Life Coach (YLC) to work with our RAYS Up program to support us in achieving our mission, vision, goals, and values.

This is a hands-on role that needs an individual who has overcome their own life challenges and is excited to share their own resilience story with youth that may find themselves in similar situations.

Above all, the selected candidate will bring enthusiasm for helping us build and support a passionate and positive impact in the lives of children, families, and communities.

This position is located within the Greater Renton Areaand primarily serves students (ages 11-21) within the Renton School District.

Located in Renton, WA, this role reports to the Clinical Director and works a part-time (20 hours per week) schedule.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Youth Support Services

  • Provide individual coaching to at-risk youth 2-4 times per month, covering topics such as identifying strengths and interests, identifying barriers to success, focusing on educational aspects (such as high school completion, postsecondary exposure, academic progress, and school-based support), and setting SMART goals.
  • Conduct social skills groups (up to 10 youth) and school- and community-based settings.
  • Plan and execute 6-8 out-of-school activities during the academic school year, and a five-week summer program, maintaining a safe environment for youth, staff, and volunteers at all times.
  • Provide case management services, including referrals to counseling, basic needs services, and other supportive programs to assist youth and their families in developing stability and self-sufficiency.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with families, schools, and / or community contacts to effectively monitor participant’s progress and advocate for participant’s needs.
  • Serve as task supervisor for student interns (as needed), including modeling, training, assigning projects, monitoring workload, answering questions, and evaluating the intern’s performance in an effective and timely manner.

Administrative Duties

  • Microsoft Work, Outlook, and Office Proficiency.
  • Maintain client records in accordance with agency policy and program contracts utilizing an Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Annual self-assessment and consult with team in setting goals for program improvement. Consult on program design and curriculum revision when needed to reflect current youth culture and emerging community issues.
  • Collect data as needed to track program outcomes and complete reports to Clinical Director, Administrative Support, and outside organizations in a timely manner.

Other duties as assigned.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities regarding antiracism, oppression, and cultural humility / curiosity, and regularly assess own performance and program for related improvements.
  • Participate in ongoing job-related professional development, in-service trainings, and continuing education.
  • Assist with internal Childhaven staff training opportunities as available.
  • Comply with all Childhaven policies and procedures, including those regarding the identification and reporting of child abuse.
  • Participate in regular administrative, clinical, and reflective supervision with designated supervisor.
  • Participate in schedule team and administrative meetings.
  • Contribute to federal, state, and local reporting requirements and reporting of child abuse.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma / GED
  • At least 2 years of experience in youth development work.
  • Commitment to racial, social, and economic justice including antiracism work.
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and auto liability insurance (travelling offsite for the job may be necessary).
  • Demonstrated success in working with youth individually and in group settings.
  • Willing and able to self-identify as a person who has lived experience, i.e., has experiences within marginalized / underserved areas, has maneuvered through the public education system, has interacted with the juvenile justice system, or has experience with mental health services.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in human services, social work, education, or closely related field.
  • Bilingual in English / Spanish highly desired.
  • Bilingual / Bicultural strongly preferred.
  • Young adults ages 21-30 with lived experience receiving services as a youth in complex, child serving systems (juvenile justice, behavioral health, child welfare, K-12 education) and is prepared to use that experience in helping others.
  • WA State Peer Counselor Certification , or ability to secure one within one (1) year of employment.

COMPENSATION

Childhaven has committed to equitable compensation practices, including pre-determining what roles require and the qualities needed from the individual that will fill the role.

To achieve this, Childhaven uses a grade and step approach to determine the compensation of each team member.
